Chapter 6 - Shadows over the Estate

Two years after the snowstorm.
The Ferrante family estate in Lake Forest was an oasis of tranquility. The sprawling stone mansion sat on fifty acres of private, manicured grounds overlooking the deep blue waters of Lake Michigan. High stone walls, security personnel, and automated gates ensured that the violence of the city remained far beyond its borders.
Inside the grand study, daylight streamed through arched floor-to-ceiling windows.
Clara sat behind a large mahogany desk, reviewing quarterly reports for the Ferrante Foundation. Her appearance was flawless—a tailored ivory suit, subtle gold jewelry, and an aura of calm, commanding authority that had earned her the deep respect of every person in Luca's inner circle.
The heavy doors opened quietly.
Luca walked into the room, wearing a dark gray suit with his tie slightly loosened. Despite the passage of time, the sight of him still made Clara’s heart skip a beat.
"You're working too hard," Luca said smoothly, walking around the desk and leaning down to press a kiss to the top of her head.
"Someone has to keep your legal ventures running cleanly," Clara teased, turning her head to kiss his cheek. "The foundation just approved three new housing developments in the West Ward."
Luca smiled, but Clara’s sharp eyes caught a subtle shadow passing across his features.
She set her pen down immediately. "What's wrong, Luca?"
Luca walked over to the window, looking out over the blue lake. "Federal Prosecutor David Vance was appointed to the Northern District of Illinois this morning."
Clara’s brow furrowed. "Vance? The man who built his career prosecuting syndicate families in New York?"
"The same," Luca confirmed, his voice dropping into a low, serious tone. "He announced a grand jury investigation into historical trade logistics in the Midwest. He's looking for a high-profile target to make his reputation in Chicago."
"Our books are spotless, Luca," Clara insisted, standing up and walking over to stand beside him. "Every invoice, every fuel log, every property acquisition over the last two years has been cleared through three independent auditing firms. There is no paper trail connecting the legitimate holdings to past family operations."
"I know," Luca said, taking her hand and bringing it to his lips. "Because you built a fortress around us, Clara. But Vance isn't just looking at numbers. He's looking for people he can squeeze. Former associates, old contractors."
"Ricci's old associates?" Clara asked, her voice dropping.
"Some of them," Luca admitted. "Vance has issued six secret subpoenas this week. He's trying to build a racketeering case based on testimony from men who would lie to save their own skins."
Clara squeezed his hand tightly, her eyes flashing with a cold, fierce determination that mirrored his own.

"Let him try," Clara stated firmly. "He might know federal law, Luca... but he doesn't know our numbers. And nobody gets through me to get to you."
Luca looked at her, a dark, proud smile curling the edge of his lips. "God, I love you."
