Chapter 3 - The Siege of the North Cabin

Back at the North Cabin, the crackle of the wood-burning fire was the only sound echoing through the vast living room.

Clara sat on the edge of the leather sofa, holding a warm cup of herbal tea in her hands. She had changed into a thick oversized wool sweater that belonged to Luca—it smelled faintly of cedar, expensive cologne, and dark tobacco, wrapping her in a comforting sense of his presence.

Suddenly, the lights overhead flickered violently, then died completely, plunging the cabin into pitch-black shadow, illuminated only by the orange glow of the fireplace.

Clara set her teacup down instantly, her heart slamming against her ribs.

The power cut, she thought, her mind instantly recalling Luca's instructions.

She stood up slowly, stepping over to the heavy mahogany desk near the bay window. She opened the top right drawer, her hand finding the cold, heavy steel of the revolver Luca had left for her. She pulled it out, her fingers trembling slightly as she checked the cylinder. It was fully loaded with six hollow-point rounds.

Outside, a faint crunching sound echoed through the deep snow near the side porch.

Clara crouched behind the heavy leather sofa, raising the heavy pistol with both hands, aiming it toward the locked wooden entrance doors.

CRASH!

The reinforced glass window of the side patio shattered into a thousand glittering pieces. Heavy boots stepped over the broken glass, entering the kitchen area.

"Find her!" a harsh, rough voice barked in the darkness. "Marco wants the accountant alive! She's our leverage against Ferrante!"

"Check the upstairs bedrooms!" another voice shouted.

Clara pressed her back against the sofa, holding her breath, tears of terror stinging her eyes. There were at least three men inside the house.

She heard heavy footsteps approaching the living room threshold. A tactical flashlight beam sliced through the darkness, sweeping across the furniture, the paintings on the wall, and finally stopping on the desk where the drawer was left wide open.

"She's downstairs," the lead mercenary called out, stepping into the living room, swinging his submachine gun toward the seating area. "Come out, little lady! We know you're in here! Make it easy on yourself and nobody gets hurt!"

The man stepped closer to the sofa, his boots crunching on a piece of stray firewood.

Clara didn't wait.

Remembering the basic target practice her father had taught her years ago, she rose from behind the sofa, leveled the heavy revolver, and pulled the trigger.

BANG!

The deafening shot echoed like a cannon inside the enclosed room. The bullet struck the mercenary in the shoulder, knocking him backward into a wooden coffee table, which shattered under his weight.

"SHE'S GOT A GUN!" the wounded man screamed, rolling across the floor as his partner rushed into the room, opening fire wildly.

Muzzle flashes illuminated the living room in blinding bursts of light. Bullets tore through the leather sofa, sending clouds of stuffing flying into the air as Clara crawled desperately across the hardwood floor toward the hallway pantry.

A heavy hand reached out from the darkness, grabbing Clara by her ankle and yanking her backward with brutal force.

"Got you, bitch!" a huge mercenary sneered, towering over her as he pinned her wrists to the floor, knocking the revolver from her hand.

Clara thrashed violently, screaming with all the strength in her lungs. "GET OFF ME! LUCA!"

"Ferrante isn't coming for you, sweetheart," the man laughed viciously, pulling a zip-tie from his vest. "He's busy dying at the docks—"

TIRES SCREECHED OUTSIDE.

Before the mercenary could finish his sentence, a black Mercedes breached the cabin’s front wall, shattering the heavy oak doors and stone pillars in a violent storm of splintered wood, flying glass, and metal.

The front end of the SUV slammed directly into the living room, crushing the second mercenary against the far stone wall.

The driver's side door flew open.

Luca Ferrante erupted from the vehicle like an avenging demon from the depths of hell. His face was covered in blood from his wounded arm, his suit torn, his eyes burning with an unholy, terrifying vengeance.

In one fluid motion, Luca drew a combat knife from his belt and vaulted over the hood of his wrecked car.

The mercenary pinning Clara barely had time to raise his weapon before Luca was upon him.

With a brutal, primal roar, Luca slammed the man backward into the hearth, driving the knife down with terrifying precision. The struggle was over in seconds—a short, violent gasp, and then silence returned to the cabin.

Luca dropped the knife, turning instantly toward Clara, who was curled on the floor, panting frantically, covered in dust and wood splinters.

"Clara!" Luca gasped out, dropping to his knees beside her, his large hands frantically checking her head, her arms, her neck, his voice trembling with an emotion so intense it broke through his rugged exterior entirely. "Clara! Look at me! Did they shoot you?! Did they touch you?!"

Clara looked up at him through her tears. Seeing his bloody arm and his torn clothing, she threw her arms around his neck, burying her face into his throat, sobbing uncontrollably.

"Luca! You came... you came back!" she wept, clinging to him as if he were the only solid thing in a collapsing universe.

Luca pulled her tightly into his lap, his arms wrapping around her with absolute, desperate force, burying his face into her hair, resting his forehead against her neck as his shoulders heaved with ragged breaths.

"I will never leave you," Luca promised, his voice cracking with emotion as he held her close against his heart. "I swear to God, Clara... as long as I breathe, nobody will ever hurt you again."

Outside, the sirens of Luca's full tactical fleet began to echo through the snow-covered valley, but inside the ruined living room, wrapped in each other's arms, the rest of the world ceased to exist.
