Chapter 4 - The Aftermath and the Vow

Twenty-four hours later.

The private medical suite at the Ferrante family's secure estate in Downtown Chicago was quiet, warm, and bathed in the soft glow of bedside lamps.

Clara sat on a plush leather armchair, wearing a comfortable soft silk robe. Her hands were wrapped around a mug of hot broth. She had minor bruises on her ankles and wrists from her struggle with the mercenary, but otherwise, she was physically unharmed.

Across the room, Luca stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, wearing a black silk shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. A clean white bandage was wrapped tightly around his upper left arm where the bullet had grazed him.

Mateo stood near the door, reporting in a low, respectful tone.

"The Moretti family has surrendered all claims to the South Dock facilities, boss," Mateo reported, holding an encrypted ledger. "Marco Moretti is currently in federal custody following our tip-off to the Organized Crime Task Force. Their leadership structure is completely shattered. They won't be a threat to us ever again."

Luca didn't turn around from the window. "And Ricci's estate?"

"Seized," Mateo confirmed. "The stolen fuel assets have been fully recovered and routed back to our primary holding accounts. Everything is clean."

"Good," Luca said softly. "Leave us, Mateo."

"Yes, boss." Mateo bowed his head respectfully to Clara before quietly stepping out of the room, closing the heavy mahogany door behind him.

Silence settled over the suite.

Luca turned around slowly, stepping toward Clara. The cold, ruthless killer who had stormed the cabin twenty-four hours ago was gone, replaced once again by the solemn, deeply protective man who had carried her out of the snow bank on Christmas Eve.

He knelt in front of her chair, placing his large hands gently over hers on the armrests.

"How are you feeling?" he asked quietly, searching her face.

"Better," Clara smiled faintly, setting her mug on the side table. She reached out, her delicate fingers lightly touching the white bandage on his arm. "Does it hurt?"

"I've had worse," Luca answered softly, his eyes fixing on her fingers. "Clara... we need to talk about what happens next."

Clara’s heart tightened slightly. "What happens next?"

Luca took a deep breath, looking up into her brown eyes with absolute honesty.

"You came into my organization as an employee," Luca said, his voice rich and deep. "You kept your head down, did your job, and stayed clear of the violent reality of my world. But last night... my world dragged you into its fires because of me."

He raised her hand to his lips, pressing a gentle kiss against her knuckles.

"I can set up a secure trust fund for you today, Clara," Luca offered, though his eyes held a deep, hidden pain as he spoke the words. "Ten million dollars. A new identity, a beautiful house in Europe or South America, far away from Chicago, far away from the Ferrante name. You can have a quiet, safe life where nobody will ever put a gun to your head again."

Clara stared at him, stunned. "You're offering to send me away?"

"I'm offering you a choice," Luca corrected softly, his voice trembling slightly. "Because I love you too much to force you into a life of shadows and danger. If you stay with me, Clara... you will be the queen of this city. Everyone will know who you are. My enemies will target you, my allies will bow to you, and you will never have a simple life again."

He looked at her with an intensity that took her breath away.

"I love you, Clara. I've loved you since the day you stood up to me in my office over a four percent margin error. But I will not trap you in my world if it terrifies you."

Clara looked at the man kneeling before her.

She thought about the cold snow bank at the warehouse. She thought about the way he had wrapped his bare body around hers to save her life. She thought about the terror in his eyes when he had crashed his car through the cabin wall to rescue her from monsters.

She didn't see a crime boss. She saw the man who had given her his entire heart without asking for anything in return.

Clara leaned forward, reaching out with both hands to frame his strong jaw, pulling his face up to hers.

"I was frozen in the snow, Luca," Clara whispered, her eyes shining with absolute clarity and love. "I was ready to die because I thought I was alone in the world. You didn't just save my life... you gave me a reason to want to live it."

"Clara..." Luca breathed out, his dark eyes wide with sudden hope.

"I don't want a house in Europe," Clara declared, her voice ringing with unwavering strength. "I don't want a quiet life without you. I belong right here, by your side. If your world is filled with shadows, then I will stand beside you in the dark."

May you like

Luca let out a shaky, emotional breath, rising up to wrap his arms around her waist, pulling her out of the chair and pressing his lips to hers in a deep, passionate, and desperate kiss that sealed their fates together forever.

Clara wrapped her arms around his neck, kissing him back with all the passion she had kept hidden for eighteen long months, letting him feel the absolute truth of her devotion.
