Chapter 2 - The Shadows at the Docks

The South Chicago docks were a wasteland of rusting shipping containers, frozen seawater, and howling wind.
Snow swirled in violent gusts around the perimeter of Warehouse 4, obscuring the dark silhouettes of three black SUVs parked near the water's edge.
Inside the warehouse, Ricci paced nervously back and forth across the concrete floor, clutching a heavy thermos of coffee. Standing across from him was Marco Moretti, the ruthless youngest brother of the rival Moretti crime family, flanked by four armed mercenaries.
"Where is the rest of the ledger data, Ricci?" Marco demanded, his coat collar turned up against the draft. "You promised us the full financial routing codes for the Ferrante holdings by ten o’clock."
"I had to leave early!" Ricci stammered, his eyes darting frantically toward the darkened windows. "There was a problem at the eastern warehouse! I had to lock the premises before anyone noticed the fuel logs were missing!"
"What kind of problem?" Marco asked, his eyes narrowing.
"The accountant... Clara Voss," Ricci stammered, wiping sweat from his forehead despite the freezing air. "She was snooping around the fuel logs. I... I locked her in the security vestibule during the lockdown. By now, she's frozen to death. Nobody will find her until Monday."
Marco stared at Ricci for a long, silent moment, then let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "You idiot. You left a high-ranking Ferrante employee to freeze on company property? Do you have any idea how obsessed Luca Ferrante is with operational order?"
"She's just a civilian worker!" Ricci protested defensively. "She's an accountant! Luca doesn't care about a damn paper-pusher!"
CRASH.
The heavy steel industrial doors of the warehouse exploded inward with a deafening boom.
Before the dust and snow could clear, tactical flashbangs detonated inside the space, filling the warehouse with blinding white light and disorienting bangs that threw Marco’s men into complete chaos.
Shots echoed through the metal rafters. High-caliber gunfire tore through the shipping crates as Luca’s vanguard team flooded the facility with ruthless, military precision.
"Guns down! GO GO GO!" Mateo’s voice boomed over the gunfire.
Marco Moretti dove behind a steel container, returning fire with his handgun, while his mercenaries were cut down within seconds by Luca's superior firepower.
Ricci dropped his thermos, screaming in terror as he scrambled backward across the oil-slicked concrete, trying to crawl toward a rear fire exit.
A heavy boot slammed down onto Ricci’s chest, pinning him flat against the concrete with incredible force.
Ricci looked up through the haze of smoke and flashing red emergency lights.
Standing over him was Luca Ferrante.
Luca wasn't wearing a helmet or tactical gear. He wore his dark suit coat, soaked with snow, his face illuminated by the harsh overhead lights. His dark eyes held no humanity—only an absolute, terrifying vacuum of rage.
"L-Luca!" Ricci choked out, blood pooling at the corner of his mouth from the impact. "Boss! Please! It was the Morettis! They forced me! They threatened my family!"
Luca didn't speak. He reached down with one hand, grabbed Ricci by the front of his jacket, and hoisted the grown man off the floor with one arm, slamming him violently against a steel support pillar.
"Where is Marco?" Luca asked, his voice dead calm.
Before Ricci could answer, a shot rang out from the darkness near the loading dock.
The bullet grazed Luca’s upper arm, tearing through his suit jacket and leaving a streak of dark red blood across his white shirt. Luca didn't even flinch. He slowly turned his head toward the shadows where Marco Moretti was sprinting toward a waiting speedboat tied to the dock.
"Mateo," Luca called out softly.
"I'm on him, boss!" Mateo yelled, leading three men toward the dock to cut off Marco's escape route.
Luca turned his attention back to Ricci, who was trembling violently, tears streaming down his face as he hung suspended against the pillar.
"You left her in the snow," Luca whispered, stepping so close Ricci could smell the gunpowder and cold air on him.
"I'm sorry! Boss, I'm sorry! I didn't think she'd die so fast!" Ricci wept hysterically.
Luca’s jaw tightened. "She didn't die."
Ricci blinked, stunned. "W-what?"
"I found her," Luca said, his voice dropping into a register that made Ricci’s blood run colder than the winter outside. "I held her while her body thawed. I listened to her try to apologize for catching your pathetic theft. And as I sat there in the dark, watching her shiver, I decided what I was going to do to you."
"Luca, please! Have mercy!" Ricci begged, clutching at Luca's arm.
"I don't have mercy for men who hurt what belongs to me," Luca said flatly.
He drew a heavy, silver-plated pistol from his shoulder holster, pressing the cold barrel directly beneath Ricci’s chin.
"Luca, wait!" Mateo’s voice shouted from the dock entrance, running back into the warehouse. "Marco's secured! But we have a problem at the cabin!"
Luca’s entire posture went rigidly still. The pistol barrel remained locked against Ricci’s chin, but his head snapped toward Mateo.
"What problem?" Luca demanded.
Mateo held up a glowing tablet screen, his face pale. "The security feed at the North Cabin just went dark, boss. Three minutes ago, a heavily armed secondary Moretti strike team breached the outer gate perimeter."
Luca felt his heart stop.
Marco Moretti hadn't just come to the docks to buy stolen fuel codes. He had used Ricci as bait to draw Luca away from his private sanctuary—knowing that if Luca left his estate, the ultimate leverage was waiting inside.
Luca pulled the trigger without looking.
A sharp crack echoed through the warehouse. Ricci's body went limp and hit the floor with a dull thud.

Luca didn't look down at the dead man. He shoved his gun back into his holster, turned on his heel, and sprinted toward his Mercedes at top speed, his wounded arm dripping blood onto the snow.
"GET THE CARS!" Luca roared over the howling wind, his voice laced with a primal, desperate agony. "IF SHE IS HURT, I WILL BURN THIS ENTIRE CITY TO THE GROUND!"
