Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

The safe house was a fortified concrete bunker hidden beneath an abandoned seafood cold-storage warehouse at the edge of the harbor. The air smelled of salt and rust. Dim halogen lights flickered overhead, casting long, swaying shadows across the steel furniture.

Leah refused to let me set her down. She sat in my lap, her face buried against my neck, her small hands tightly gripping my collar. Every time I shifted, she whimpered softly, terrified that I would vanish into the dark.

Damian stood near a wall of monitors, methodically disassembling, cleaning, and reassembling his sidearm. The mechanical click of the metal components was the only sound breaking the heavy silence.

"She remembered you," Damian said suddenly, his voice soft in the cavernous space.

I smoothed Leah's hair back from her forehead. "She was just an infant when they took her. How could she remember?"

"A child knows its mother," Damian said, turning to look at us. "The scent of your skin, the sound of your voice... she locked it deep inside her mind after the trauma of being separated from you. That's why she never spoke a word to anyone else. She was waiting for you."

Tears pricked my eyes as I looked down at my daughter. Two years of hollow, aching grief vanished, replaced by a fierce, maternal instinct that burned like fire in my chest.

"I won't let them take her again, Damian," I said, looking him dead in the eye. "I don't care who you are, or what kind of world you live in. She is my daughter."

Damian paused, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an unreadable expression. "She is your daughter, Elena. But to the rest of the world, she is a Caruso. And as long as I draw breath, no one will ever hurt either of you again."
