Chapter 6 - A Mother’s Instinct

Our sanctuary did not last through the night. At 4:00 AM, the security monitors in the bunker flashed red. The outer motion sensors near the harbor docks had been cut.
"They tracked the vehicle's transponder," Damian muttered, racking the slide of his pistol. "Julian was compromised."
Before we could reach the rear emergency exit, the heavy steel door of the bunker was blown off its hinges by a breaching charge. The shockwave knocked me to the floor, sending a cloud of dust and acrid smoke swirling through the room.
Two armed men in tactical gear burst through the opening, weapons raised. Damian fired instantly, taking down the first man with two shots to the chest. But the second mercenary fired a blind burst, and a bullet grazed Damian’s left shoulder, driving him back against the steel desk.
Blood quickly soaked through his dark shirt, but Damian didn't stop moving. He threw his body in front of Leah and me, using himself as a shield to block the doorway.
The gunman pressed forward, aiming his rifle directly at Damian's head. Driven by pure survival instinct, I scrambled across the floor, grabbed a heavy iron pipe from a nearby supply rack, and struck the gunman across the back of his knees with all my strength.

The man stumbled, dropping his rifle. Damian seized the opening, grabbed the assailant by the tactical vest, and slammed him face-first into the concrete wall, knocking him unconscious.
Damian leaned against the wall, breathing heavily, his hand pressed against his bleeding shoulder. He looked down at me, a rare, dark smile playing at the corner of his lips. "You're full of surprises, Elena," he rasped. "Now grab the child. It's time to end this war."
