Three weeks later, the morning sun poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of a private medical suite overlooking the bay. Damian had survived the surgery, the bullet missing his heart by mere millimeters. The syndicate had been dismantled, Victor and his co-conspirators were facing life sentences without parole, and the legal records regarding Leah had been permanently corrected. The court officially granted full, shared custody of Leah to me and Damian, recognizing the unique bond and tragic history that bound us all together.
For the first time in two years, the constant weight of grief lifted from my chest. I sat on the edge of Damian’s bed while Leah played happily on the rug nearby, chatter flowing effortlessly from her lips as she narrated a story to her velvet rabbit.
