Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

I looked down at our intertwined fingers, feeling the warmth of his hand, and then looked back at our daughter, who was currently trying to stack wooden blocks into a tower.
For two years, I had lived in a cold, grey world defined by loss and grief. I had thought my heart was permanently broken. But over the last three weeks, watching Damian fight for Leah’s life and mine, risking his own chest to take a bullet for us, I realized that my heart hadn't died—it had simply been waiting.
"You really think I walked into that restaurant three weeks ago just to walk away now?" I asked, a gentle smile touching my lips.
Damian searched my face, a rare flick of uncertainty in his dark eyes. "Elena... my life has been filled with violence and shadows. You deserve peace."
"We found peace together," I said softly, leaning forward. "You protected her when I couldn't be there. You loved her as your own when you had no reason to doubt who she was. You didn't steal my child, Damian. You kept her safe until I could find her."
I leaned in closer and pressed a warm, lingering kiss to his lips. Damian caught his breath, his strong hand coming up to cup the back of my neck, pulling me closer with a gentle, protective force.

Leah’s joyful squeal interrupted us. She scrambled up onto the side of the hospital bed, holding her velvet rabbit high in the air, before throwing herself into the middle of us. Damian let out a soft laugh, wrapping his arms around both of us, holding his family tightly against his chest.
The darkness of the past was gone. The silent years were over. Together, we had survived the storm, and as the morning sun filled the room, we finally knew that we were home.
