Chapter 11 - The Shadow in the Cradle

The peaceful serenity of the Hudson Valley estate was an illusion Dominic Rossi had paid for in blood. As he held Claire on the balcony, watching the moonlit river, he knew that the ghosts of his past rarely stayed buried. The peace they had fought so hard to achieve was fragile, a glass castle built on the ruins of an empire.
The next morning, the estate woke up to the laughter of little Harper. She ran through the sunlit corridors, her footsteps echoing like music. Claire sat at the breakfast table, her hand instinctively resting on her growing bump. She was six months pregnant, and the glow of motherhood suited her. But when Dominic walked into the room, Claire’s smile faded slightly. She knew every line of his face, and right now, his jaw was tight.
"What is it, Dom?" Claire asked, setting her teacup down.
Dominic didn't answer immediately. He kissed Harper on the top of her head, telling her to go play with her nanny in the garden. Once the door closed, he handed Claire a sleek, black envelope. There was no stamp, no return address. Inside was a single tarot card: The Tower, dripping in crimson paint, with a date written on the back—the exact expected due date of their unborn son.
"It was left at the front gate," Dominic said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register. "The security grid was bypassed for exactly forty-two seconds. Whoever did this knows our system inside out."
Claire felt a cold shiver run down her spine. The Rossi crime family had been dismantled, their enemies scattered or dead. Or so they thought. "Is it Julian?" she whispered, referencing Dominic's exiled cousin who had vanished after the fall of the New York syndicate.
"Julian doesn't have the intellect to bypass my firewalls," Dominic replied, pacing the room. "This is someone else. Someone who has been watching us, waiting for us to lower our guard. They aren't just threatening my life, Claire. They are targeting our son."

The psychological warfare had begun. Dominic immediately placed the estate on lockdown, bringing in his most trusted security detail, led by Silas, a man who had served Dominic since his days in the trenches of the underworld. But the threat wasn't just external. That afternoon, Claire received a phone call from an unknown, encrypted number. When she answered, there was no voice—only the sound of a music box playing the exact lullaby she sang to Harper every night.
Claire dropped the phone, the plastic shattering against the marble floor. The enemy wasn't just at the gates; they were already inside their lives, listening to their most intimate moments. Dominic swore an oath that night: he would tear the world apart before he let anyone harm the family he had bled to protect.
