Chapter 7 - The Trial of Iron

Pavel didn't drop his weapon.

Trained in the brutal skirmishes of Eastern European border wars, the tactical commander spun on his heel and opened fire toward the upper gallery, shouting a frantic command to his men to breach the western shutter.

The great hall descended into chaos.

Automatic gunfire shattered the remaining crystal wall sconces, plaster rained down from the ceiling like white snow, and muzzle flashes strobed across the dark mahogany walls.

Daniel’s team returned fire from the elevated gallery with brutal, surgical discipline. Within ten seconds, six of Reznik’s men were down on the marble floor, their tactical gear ruined by high-velocity rounds.

Pavel lunged toward the base of the staircase, aiming his carbine directly at Dominic’s chest.

Dominic didn't dive for cover.

In one fluid, blindingly fast movement, he drew his heavy sidearm from his hip, stepped inside Pavel’s line of sight, and fired two rounds point-blank into the commander’s vest. The impact threw Pavel backward onto the marble floor. Before the man could raise his weapon again, Dominic kicked the carbine across the room and placed his boot firmly on Pavel’s throat.

The remaining four Russian operatives, realized they were completely outmaneuvered and trapped in a crossfire, dropped their weapons to the floor and raised their hands in surrender.

In the center of the ruined hall, Viktor Reznik stood alone.

His silver-plated revolver was still in his hand, but his arm was trembling slightly. The arrogant conqueror who had walked into the estate twenty minutes ago was gone; in his place was a desperate, aging mobster whose entire empire was collapsing around his ears.

Dominic stepped off the last marble stair. He walked slowly across the blood-stained floor toward Reznik, his gun held loosely at his side.

"Drop the gun, Viktor," Dominic said softly.

Reznik looked around at his fallen men, then looked up at Dominic, his breath coming in ragged, white plumes in the chilled air of the damaged room.

"You think you’ve won, Vale?" Reznik spat, his voice raspy with fury. "You kill me tonight, and my lieutenants in Montreal will burn your shipping lines from Toronto to Manhattan! They’ll hunt that girl... Claire... to the end of the earth!"

"They won't," a voice called out from the darkness of the upper gallery.

Claire stepped out from behind the heavy oak balustrade. She held a thick, leather-bound tablet in her hands, its screen glowing softly in the dim light.

"Ten minutes ago," Claire announced, her clear voice ringing through the silent hall, "Dominic’s financial team released the full forensic audit of your offshore accounts to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Swiss Financial Intelligence Unit. Every asset you hold in Montreal, Zurich, and the Cayman Islands was frozen six minutes ago."

Reznik’s face drained of color. "What... what did you say?"

"Nathan gave you our accounts, Viktor," Claire explained with a cold, triumphant smile. "But he didn't realize that the hard drive he used was a reverse-mirror terminal. While your servers were trying to download Dominic’s files, our system was uploading a digital virus into your entire private network. You don't have an empire anymore, Mr. Reznik. You have an indictment."

Reznik stared at her, his jaw slack, his silver revolver slipping from his numb fingers and clattering uselessly onto the marble floor.

Dominic stepped up to the broken man, looking down into his wide, terrified eyes.

"Seventeen years ago, a traitor took my wife from me," Dominic said softly, his voice vibrating with absolute, unyielding authority. "Tonight, I protected the family I have left. You’re going to spend the rest of your life in a federal penitentiary in Quebec, Viktor. And you will never hear my name again."

Daniel stepped down from the gallery with two armed guards, roughly pulling Reznik’s arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

The battle for the Hudson Valley was over.

Dominic turned away from the disgraced syndicate boss and walked toward the grand staircase.

At the top of the stairs stood Claire, holding little Harper in her arms. Mia was standing beside them, leaning on Marcus’s shoulder for support, her face pale but her eyes filled with profound, tearful gratitude.

Dominic walked up the stairs, reaching out to gently take Harper from Claire’s arms. The little girl wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her face against his shoulder as if he were the safest place in the world.

Dominic looked at Mia, placing a warm, protective hand on her shoulder. "It’s over, Mia. You and Harper are safe. This house is yours for as long as you want to stay."

Mia wiped a tear from her cheek and offered him a weak, radiant smile. "Thank you, Mr. Vale. Thank you for listening to my girl."

Dominic turned to Claire, reaching out with his free arm to pull her close into his side.

Claire leaned her head against his shoulder, her hand resting over his heart, which was beating steady, strong, and true amidst the ruined hall below.

Outside, the first golden rays of the winter dawn began to break over the snow-covered Hudson River, washing away the shadows of the long, dark night.
