Chapter 5 - The Gathering of Shadows

By 3:00 AM, the Hudson Valley estate had been transformed from a luxury residential compound into a military kill-zone.
The snow outside was falling thicker now, dusting the long asphalt drive and the dark pine forests surrounding the estate in a quiet, deceptive white blanket. Inside the perimeter, thirty of Dominic’s most loyal operatives—men recruited from elite special operations units who owed their lives and livelihoods directly to Dominic—had taken up positions along the treeline, the rooftop balustrades, and the subterranean exit points.
In the command center beneath the East Wing, Daniel was monitoring a wall of high-definition thermal monitors. The screens displayed live infrared feeds of the riverbank, the northern security fence, and the private air-strip three miles west.
Dominic stood behind Daniel, wearing a black tactical suit, a Kevlar vest beneath his jacket, and a heavy sidearm holstered at his hip.
Claire stepped into the command room carrying a secure satellite phone. "Doctor Vance just called from his car. He reached his residence safely. He left two additional bags of saline and antibiotic drip units for Mia."
"Good," Dominic said without looking away from the monitors. "How is Mia doing?"
"She woke up twenty minutes ago," Claire reported, standing beside him. "She’s still weak, but her mind is clear. She told me what happened in the wine cellar, Dominic."
Dominic turned his gaze to her. "What did she say?"
"She said Nathan wasn't working alone when he locked her down there," Claire revealed, her voice grim. "He had two men with him who didn't speak English. They spoke Russian. One of them had a distinct tattoo on the back of his hand—a black double-headed eagle with a crown."
Daniel snapped his head around from the control console. "The Iron Eagle Syndicate. That’s Viktor Reznik’s personal vanguard unit out of Montreal. They don't take contract work, Boss. If they’re on the property, Reznik isn't waiting for the hard drive to finish uploading. He’s already in New York."
"He came to collect his prize," Dominic said calmly. "Nathan promised him the keys to the kingdom. Reznik isn't going to leave the valley until he verifies that Nathan delivered."
"Do we call the regional field office?" Claire asked, her eyes moving to the satellite phone in her hand. "The FBI has been trying to nail Reznik on RICO charges for five years. If they know he’s on American soil—"
"If the FBI comes onto this estate tonight, this turns into a six-month federal siege," Dominic interrupted smoothly. "Reznik will slip back across the Canadian border through his smuggling routes in Vermont, and we’ll spend the next ten years looking over our shoulders while Mia and Harper live in witness protection."
He stepped up to the main tactical screen, tapping a red button that zoomed in on a stretch of dense forest three hundred yards north of the main gates.
Three faint thermal signatures—human bodies emitting heat through the freezing air—were moving slowly through the pine trees, holding short-barreled silenced carbines.
"They think the estate is still operating under Nathan’s security schedule," Dominic analyzed silently. "They think the northern gate cameras are disabled and the patrol routes are running twenty minutes late."
"We can eliminate them before they reach the courtyard," Daniel suggested, his fingers hovering over the remote command trigger for the perimeter defense turrets.
"No," Dominic commanded. "Let them cross the inner lawn. Let them reach the terrace."
Claire looked at him, a flicker of concern crossing her face. "Dominic, the terrace is directly beneath the West Wing. Mia and Harper are up there."
Dominic turned to her, reaching out to take her hand in his. His grip was warm, solid, and entirely reassuring.
"Marcus is inside the West Wing with four men and an automatic shotgun," Dominic said softly. "The doors to that suite are three-inch reinforced steel. No one gets through them. I want Reznik’s men inside the courtyard because I want Viktor to believe his assault is succeeding."
He looked over at Daniel. "Is the river route clear?"
"Our boats are staged at the dock," Daniel confirmed. "If Reznik tries to retreat by water, he’ll run straight into three heavy gunboats we brought up from Manhattan."

Dominic pulled his tactical gloves on, tightening the leather straps around his wrists with a sharp, crisp sound.
"Tell the perimeter teams to hold their fire until the courtyard doors close behind them," Dominic ordered. "Tonight, we close the book on Montreal."
