Chapter 1 - The Elevator Ride to the Fortieth Floor

The elevator climbed quietly toward the executive penthouse of GlobalTech, the digital display glowing as the floor numbers ticked rapidly upward: 28, 29, 30...
Inside the glass car, Lucía smoothed the fabric of her yellow dress. Her small shoes were slightly scuffed at the toes, but her back remained perfectly straight. Beside her stood Javier, the firm's Senior Director of Operations, staring down at his phone screen with a pale face and tight jaw.
"Mr. Javier?" Lucía asked softly, her voice small inside the quiet elevator. "Are you mad at my mom?"
Javier took a slow, deep breath, locking his phone screen before sliding it into his jacket pocket. He looked down at the eight-year-old girl. Her large, bright hazel eyes were identical to those of the woman he had spent seven long years trying to forget—and seven years secretly searching for.
"No, Sofia," Javier said quietly. "I’m not mad at your mother. I’m angry at myself."
"My name is Lucía," she corrected gently, her brow furrowing. "Sofia is my mother."
Javier froze as if struck by lightning. He looked down at her, his eyes searching her features in shock. "Your mother's name... is Sofia?"
"Yes," Lucía said proudly, reaching into her worn backpack. "Sofia Mendoza. See? I brought her resume, her university certificates, and her design portfolio. She made all of these on our old library computer because our home computer broke three years ago."
She held out a neat blue folder. The edges were slightly frayed, but the plastic sleeve inside was immaculate.
Javier’s hands trembled as he took the folder. When he opened the first page, his chest tightened so hard he could barely breathe. There, printed in clean black font, was the name: Sofia Mendoza, Bachelor of Science in Structural Systems Architecture, Summa Cum Laude, Class of 2018.
Below the credentials was a small passport-sized photograph.
It was her.
The woman who had vanished from his life eight years ago without a trace—the woman who had been framed for a multi-million-dollar corporate espionage scandal at GlobalTech the very week she discovered she was pregnant.
"She... she never told you about me, did she?" Javier whispered, his voice cracking.
Lucía looked up, confused. "She tells me about a man named Javier every night before I go to sleep. She says he was the bravest, kindest man in the world, but that bad people forced him to forget her."
The elevator gave a quiet chime. The digital display read 40.
The polished brass doors slid open to reveal the executive holding area. Standing directly in front of the doors, surrounded by three personal security guards and two corporate attorneys, was Arthur Vance—the sixty-two-year-old Chief Executive Officer of GlobalTech, and Javier’s wealthy, uncompromising stepfather.
Beside Arthur sat a silver baby stroller. In it was two-year-old Leo, Arthur’s miraculously born late-in-life son—a toddler who had never spoken a single word despite two years of elite speech therapy and medical consultations.
"Javier," Arthur said coldly, his eyes darting from his stepson to the small girl in the yellow dress. "What is the meaning of this circus in the lobby? Security reported that a child bypassed floor access. Who allowed her up here?"
Before Javier could speak, little two-year-old Leo sat up rigid in his stroller.
The toddler’s hands clutched the padded front rail. His wide blue eyes fixed entirely on Lucía’s yellow dress. Then, his eyes traveled past Lucía, landing squarely on the paper folder Javier held in his hands—a folder that bore a subtle, hand-scented lavender mark that Sofia had used for years.
Leo’s chest heaved. Tears welled in the child's eyes, streaming down his chubby cheeks.

Then, a sound tore through the silence of the executive hallway—a sound that made Arthur Vance drop his golden pen, made the security guards stiffen, and made the lawyers stop in their tracks.
"MAMA!" Leo gasped out loud, his tiny voice echoing against the marble walls. "MAMA SOFIA!"
