Chapter 3 - The Shadow of the Past

Victoria Vance stepped out of the elevator, clad in an immaculate white cream pantsuit, her diamond earrings catching the bright fluorescent light. Behind her stood two uniformed city police officers.
"Arthur," Victoria said smoothly, her voice cool and devoid of emotion. "Why is there an unvetted child in the executive wing? Security flagged an unauthorized access breach on floor forty."
She glanced down at Lucía with a look of supreme disdain, then spotted the blue folder in Javier's hands. For a fraction of a second, her dark eyes flickered with a sudden, sharp panic, though she quickly masked it behind a cold smile.
"Officers," Victoria turned to the policemen behind her. "Please escort this child out of the building. Her presence is a violation of corporate security protocols."
"Touch her, and I'll have your badges before sunset," Javier warned, stepping directly in front of Lucía like an immovable wall.
"Javier, don't be ridiculous!" Victoria snapped, her voice tightening. "You're letting your childish emotions run wild over some street beggar's stunt! We have a global board meeting in thirty minutes!"
"She isn't a street beggar, Victoria," Arthur said slowly. His voice sounded hollow, almost broken. He turned to face his wife, his hands still resting on Leo’s stroller. "Leo just spoke."
Victoria froze. "What?"
"Leo spoke his first words five minutes ago," Arthur repeated, his eyes searching his wife’s face with newfound suspicion. "He looked at this girl's folder and called out for 'Mama Sofia'."
Victoria’s pale face lost every drop of color. "That's... that's absurd. The child is non-verbal! He probably made a random babbling noise—"
"He said 'Mama Sofia stay'!" Arthur roared, slamming his hand against the leather armrest of the stroller. The sudden explosion made the lawyers and officers flinch. "He held the toy that Sofia Mendoza left in his nursery when she worked the night cleaning shift!"
Victoria swallowed hard, adjusting the gold watch on her wrist. "Arthur, you're being manipulated. Sofia Mendoza is a convicted corporate thief. She was blacklisted eight years ago for selling our firm's intellectual property. If she was cleaning rooms here under a fake name, she was likely committing corporate espionage again!"
"Then why didn't you report her, Victoria?" Javier asked softly.
Victoria’s head snapped toward him. "What did you say?"
"Sofia applied under her real name three times through the human resources portal," Javier said, pulling out his phone and displaying three archived internal emails. "All three applications were flagged, rejected, and deleted at the CFO level within four minutes of submission. No HR manager ever saw them. Only you."
Javier took a step toward his stepmother.
"How did you know she was applying, Victoria? Unless you had an automated firewall alert set up on her Social Security number for eight years?"
Victoria sneered, taking a step back toward the elevator doors. "I am the Chief Financial Officer! It is my job to protect this company from blacklisted criminals!"
"No," Lucía's small voice interrupted, stepping out from behind Javier. She pointed her small finger straight at Victoria. "You're the lady from the hospital!"
Everyone in the hallway locked their eyes on the eight-year-old girl.
"Lucía," Javier asked gently, kneeling down beside her. "What do you mean?"
"When I was four years old, my mom was in the hospital with high fever," Lucía said, her voice clear and firm. "This lady came into our room with two men in black suits. She told my mom that if she ever came near Mr. Javier or this big building again, she would make sure the doctors took me away to a dark house for orphans."

A collective gasp echoed across the floor.
Arthur turned to stare at his wife, absolute horror dawning across his face. "Victoria... what did you do?"
