Chapter 7 - The Confrontation in the Storm

An hour later, a heavy thunderclap rattled the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the GlobalTech board room on the forty-second floor.
The entire executive board of directors had been convened for an emergency session. Twenty high-ranking executives in tailored suits sat around the perimeter of the giant oval marble table, whispering anxiously among themselves.
At the head of the table sat Victoria Vance. She looked pale, but her expression remained rigid, her fingers clicking nervously against her high-end tablet screen.
"This emergency session is ridiculous," Victoria sneered, looking around at the board members. "Arthur has clearly suffered a nervous breakdown following his son's medical situation. I am moving to exercise power-of-attorney over his corporate voting shares—"
The heavy oak double doors of the boardroom slammed open.
Arthur Vance walked in first. He was no longer dressed in his CEO suit jacket; his sleeves were rolled up, his eyes sharp and burning with cold, absolute authority.
Walking behind him was Javier, holding Sofia’s hand tightly in his left hand, while holding eight-year-old Lucía with his right. Sofia wore a clean navy trench coat, her hair brushed neatly back, her face bruised but her posture regal and proud.
Beside them walked two federal agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, accompanied by the Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.
"Victoria Vance," the lead federal agent announced, pulling an official document from his leather coat. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy to commit kidnapping."
Gasps erupted across the boardroom. Several board members stood up in shock.
"This is an outrage!" Victoria shouted, slamming her hands against the marble table as she stood up. "On what evidence?! I built this company's financial portfolio for a decade!"
"On the evidence of the master audit trail you tried to destroy eight years ago," Sofia said clearly, stepping forward to stand beside Javier.
She reached into her coat pocket and placed a sleek black metallic drive onto the center of the marble table.
"When I was CFO Assistant eight years ago," Sofia explained to the assembled board, her voice ringing out steady and true, "I discovered that Victoria had siphoned forty-two million dollars from the GlobalTech offshore employee pension fund into shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands. When she realized I had discovered the transfer logs, she forged my signature on a blueprint sale to Titan Dynamics to frame me as a corporate spy."
"She's lying!" Victoria screamed, her face contorting into a mask of pure venom. "She's a blacklisted maid!"
"The digital signature on the pension transfers matches your personal biometric key, Victoria," Arthur said coldly, looking down at his wife with absolute disgust. "The FBI decrypted the offshore accounts two hours ago. Every dollar you stole bears your personal authorization code."
Arthur stepped closer to her, setting a thick stack of papers on the table.
"Furthermore, the security guards you sent to kidnap Sofia from her home an hour ago are currently in federal custody. They have already signed full confessions implicating you as their employer."
Victoria looked around the room, her chest heaving, searching the faces of the board members she had manipulated for years. But every single executive turned their back on her, refusing to meet her eyes.
The federal agents stepped forward, pulling her arms behind her back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.

"Arthur! Please!" Victoria wept as she was dragged toward the door, her dignified facade shattering completely. "I did it for our family! I did it for us!"
"You didn't do it for us, Victoria," Arthur said softly, turning away as she was led down the hallway in chains. "You did it for yourself."
