Chapter 6 - The Broken Cottage

Inside the house, the living room had been systematically destroyed.
Bookshelves were overturned, couch cushions were slashed open, and old family photographs lay scattered across the wet wooden floorboards, their glass frames smashed into tiny sparkling fragments.
In the center of the room, bound to a wooden chair with heavy plastic zip-ties, was Sofia.
Her hair was damp, falling across her pale face. A bruise was forming on her left cheekbone, but her dark hazel eyes remained fierce, burning with defiant courage as she stared down two burly men in black tactical jackets who were tearing up the floorboards behind her small kitchen table.
"I told you," Sofia gasped out, her voice raspy and bloodied. "The flash drive isn't here. I sent it to an off-site legal repository three days ago. The moment I don't check in by five o'clock today, the files will be automatically transmitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission!"
One of the men—a tall, scar-faced operative—stepped forward, raising a gloved hand. "You're lying, lady. Victoria said you kept the original encrypted hard drive in this house—"
"Drop your weapon!" Marcus’s voice roared through the shattered front entrance as he burst into the room, his tactical flashlight illuminating the dark interior with blinding white light.
The scar-faced operative reached for his belt, but Marcus was faster. A loud, muffled THUD echoed as a non-lethal taser round struck the operative in the chest, dropping him instantly to his knees in electrocuting spasms. The second operative threw his hands into the air, surrendering immediately as two more security guards pinned him against the ruined kitchen wall.
"SOFIA!"
Javier burst through the doorway, dropping to his knees beside the wooden chair. He pulled a tactical pocket knife from Marcus's belt and slashed through the plastic zip-ties securing her wrists and ankles.
"Javier..." Sofia gasped, her eyes widening in disbelief as her hands came free. She reached out, her cool, trembling fingers touching his face as if testing whether he was real or a hallucination. "You... you came..."
"I'm here, Sofia," Javier sobbed softly, pulling her fragile body into his arms, burying his face in her shoulder as he held her tight. "I'm so sorry... I'm so sorry I took eight years to find you..."
"Mommy!"
Lucía ran into the room, her small shoes splashing through the rainwater on the floorboards. She threw herself into Sofia’s arms, weeping hysterically. "Mommy! I did it! I took your folder to the big building! I showed them your papers!"
Sofia held her daughter tight against her chest, kissing her hair, her face, her cheeks, crying tears of absolute relief. "Oh, my sweet girl... my brave, beautiful girl..."

Javier stood up, pulling his jacket off and gently draping it over Sofia’s shivering shoulders. He looked down at the woman he loved, then at the small child holding her hand.
"It's over, Sofia," Javier said, his voice filled with iron conviction. "Victoria's empire ends tonight."
