Chapter 8 - The Truth Revealed

Late that evening, the rain stopped over Chicago, leaving the city streets glistening under the yellow glow of the streetlights.
Inside the quiet penthouse apartment on Lake Shore Drive, a soft, warm fire crackled in the stone fireplace.
Two-year-old Leo sat on the plush Persian rug, playing happily with wooden building blocks. For the first time in his life, the toddler was laughing out loud—a sweet, musical sound that filled the grand living room with genuine warmth.
Sitting beside him on the floor was Lucía, showing him how to stack the blocks into tall towers without letting them fall.
"Look, Leo!" Lucía laughed as a tower tumbled over softly onto the rug. "It goes boom!"
"Boom!" Leo cheered happily, clapping his chubby hands together. "Boom again!"
On the large velvet sofa nearby, Sofia sat wrapped in a warm cashmere blanket, holding a mug of hot tea. Her pale skin had regained its color, and though the bruise on her cheek remained, her eyes held a serene, peaceful calm she hadn't known in nearly a decade.
Javier sat beside her, his hand wrapped firmly around hers, refusing to let go for even a single second.
Arthur walked over from the kitchen, carrying a tray of warm pastries and milk. The older man looked tired, but the dark, heavy burden that had weighed on his shoulders for eight years seemed to have finally vanished.
"Sofia," Arthur said quietly, setting the tray on the coffee table and taking a seat in the armchair opposite them. He looked down at his hands for a long moment before raising his eyes to meet hers. "I don't know if I will ever be able to ask for your forgiveness."
Sofia set her tea mug down gently. "Mr. Vance—"
"Please... call me Arthur," the CEO interrupted softly. "Eight years ago, I believed the lies Victoria fed me. I signed your termination order without looking into the digital audit logs myself. I allowed a brave, innocent woman to be cast out into the cold, pregnant and alone, while my stepson suffered in silence thinking you had abandoned him."
Arthur reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a signed legal document, placing it gently on the table between them.
"This is a formal public exoneration issued by the board of directors," Arthur explained. "It fully restores your professional engineering license, clears all records of wrong-doing, and authorizes a fifteen-million-dollar settlement from the company's private insurance fund for wrongful termination and damages."
Sofia stared at the document, her lips parting in shock. "Arthur... I didn't do this for money. I just wanted my daughter to know her mother wasn't a thief."
"I know," Arthur smiled warmly, tears glistening in his eyes as he looked over at Lucía playing on the rug. "And that is precisely why you deserve every penny. But there is one more thing."
Arthur turned to look at Javier.
"Effective tomorrow morning, I am officially stepping down as Chief Executive Officer of GlobalTech," Arthur announced clearly. "I am appointing Javier as CEO... and the board has unanimously requested that you, Sofia, accept the position of Chief Architectural Officer to lead our global sustainable housing project."
Sofia looked at Javier, her eyes wide with overwhelming emotion. Javier smiled, leaning in to kiss her forehead gently.

"What do you say, partner?" Javier whispered softly. "Ready to build something real this time?"
Sofia choked back a tear of pure happiness, nodding slowly. "Yes... oh, yes!"
