Chapter 2 - The Silent Toddler Speaks

The hallway plunged into absolute stillness.

Arthur Vance turned dead-pale. He stumbled back a step, gripping the handle of the stroller as if he had seen a ghost. For twenty-four months, the world's highest-paid pediatric neurologists, speech therapists, and developmental specialists had declared little Leo completely non-verbal. They had speculated on autism, brain trauma, and childhood apraxia.

Yet here, in front of an eight-year-old girl in a yellow dress and a faded blue folder, the child had just spoken his very first words.

"What... what did he just say?" Arthur stammered, his voice shaking uncontrollably. He dropped to his knees beside the stroller, catching his son’s arms. "Leo? Leo, look at Daddy! Say it again!"

Leo ignored his father entirely. He reached his chubby little arms out toward Lucía, crying hysterically, his tiny shoes kicking against the footrest. "Mama Sofia! Mama Sofia stay!"

Lucía took a hesitant step forward, stepping past the intimidated security guards. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, hand-stitched felt bunny with mismatched button eyes.

"Don't cry, little baby," Lucía whispered gently, stepping right up to the stroller. She offered the felt bunny to the crying toddler. "Look, Mr. Bunny says everything is okay."

Leo instantly quieted down. He took the felt bunny in his tiny hands, hugged it against his chest, and buried his face in the soft fabric, hiccuping softly.

Arthur looked up at Lucía in total shock. "Where... where did you get that toy?"

Lucía blinked, tilting her head. "My mom made it for me when I was little. But last year, when she worked as a temporary night-cleaner for the big nursery on the fifth floor of this building, she made another one for the quiet baby in the cradle."

Javier felt as though the floor beneath him had dropped into a deep abyss. He stepped between Arthur and Lucía, holding out the resume folder.

"Arthur," Javier said, his voice cold as ice. "Sofia Mendoza didn't just apply for an architectural position here three times over the past year. She was working here. At night. Cleaning your executive suites to pay for Lucía’s school supplies after your security team blacklisted her professional license."

"That's impossible," Arthur breathed, standing up slowly, his eyes fixed on the folder. "Sofia Mendoza was terminated eight years ago for selling proprietary structural blueprints to our rival firm, Titan Dynamics. She signed a confession!"

"She was framed!" Lucía yelled suddenly, her small voice ringing out with fierce, protective fury. Her eyes burned with tears as she glared at the powerful CEO. "My mom never stole anything! She cried every night because somebody changed the computer files on her desk! She came here today because she wanted to prove she was honest!"

"Lucía, sweetheart, calm down," Javier whispered, kneeling beside her and placing his large hands securely on her shoulders. "Let me handle this."

He looked up at Arthur with absolute coldness.

"Eight years ago, Arthur, you told me Sofia abandoned me and took a two-million-dollar bribe from Titan Dynamics. You showed me the signed confession. You told me to move on and take over operations." Javier stood up, taking the blue folder from Lucía’s hands. "But Leo just recognized her scent on this folder. He recognized the toy she left in his crib when she worked the night shift."

Javier stepped close to his stepfather, speaking in a low, dangerous register.

"Who was the executive who signed Sofia's termination clearance eight years ago, Arthur?"

Arthur opened his mouth to reply, but before he could utter a word, the private elevator behind them chimed again.

The doors slid open to reveal Victoria Vance—Arthur’s second wife, Javier’s cold stepmother, and the current Chief Financial Officer of GlobalTech.
