Chapter 14 - FRACTURED HAVEN

The blare of federal sirens shattered the fragile standoff in the sub-basement.

"Kill them!" Moretti snarled, stepping backward toward the stairs.

Before the lead guard could pull his trigger, Dominic slammed his hand into the heavy iron vault door, swinging the two-ton slab of steel outward with all his strength, amplified by the mechanical hydraulics of his exoskeleton. The heavy metal door struck two of the armed guards like a battering ram, launching them backward into the concrete wall with bone-crunching force.

Marcus Miller appeared at the top of the stairs, firing two suppressed shots from a heavy caliber pistol. The remaining guards collapsed to the ground as smoke filled the narrow staircase.

"Out! Now!" Miller shouted, providing covering fire.

Dominic grabbed Elena by the waist, sweeping her behind him as they navigated the dark corridor toward the concealed rear exit. Flashbang grenades detonated in the upper levels of the building as federal tactical teams breached the front entryways.

They burst out into the damp night air, scrambling into the waiting armored SUV just as tactical vans flooded the alleyway. Miller slammed the vehicle into reverse, tires shrieking against the wet asphalt, leaving the chaotic scene behind in a swirl of red and blue lights.

Two hours later, they were sitting in a secure hangar at a private airfield outside Chicago, waiting for their jet to refuel.

Elena sat on a metal crate, her face pale, her hands trembling slightly as the lingering adrenaline began to fade. She looked at her hands, then up at Dominic, who sat quietly on a bench while Miller performed a diagnostic check on his exoskeleton's hydraulic seals.

"We almost died down there, Dominic," Elena whispered, her voice crackling with emotion. "If Marcus had been five seconds late—"

"I had it under control, Elena," Dominic said softly, though the strain in his voice was evident.

"No, you didn't!" she snapped, standing up, her composure finally breaking. "You threw a two-ton iron door at four armed men! You treated yourself like a human battering ram! You promised me—you promised the boys—that the violence was over!"

Dominic looked down at his mechanical legs, the silver-gray of his eyes dark with remorse. "Dante Moretti threatened Leo and Lucas. He threatened to turn them into orphans."

"And what will happen if you die in a dark basement in Chicago?" Elena asked, tears shining in her eyes. "Who protects them then? Who reads them bedtime stories? Who holds them when they have nightmares about the cold river? You think you’re protecting us by becoming a monster again, but you’re just running back into the dark because it’s familiar!"

Dominic remained silent, the heavy weight of her words sinking deep into his chest. He reached out to take her hand, but she stepped back, taking a deep breath to regain her composure.

"Our haven in Washington is already fractured," Elena said softly, wiping her eyes. "The boys know something is wrong. Leo asked about the rabbit again before we left. He feels the tension, Dominic. Children always do."

Marcus Miller stepped forward, wiping grease from his hands with a rag. "Elena is right, Dominic. Moretti escaped the raid. He used a concealed drainage tunnel beneath the warehouse before the feds swept the sub-basement. He’s on the run, and a wounded animal with access to private military contractors is the most dangerous thing on earth."

"Where will he go?" Dominic asked, forcing his focus back to the strategy.

"He won't stay in Chicago, and he won't go to New York," Elena said, her analytical mind overriding her grief as she pulled up a global tracking map on her laptop. "Look at his personal financial movements over the last six hours. Right after the raid, three wire transfers were dispatched from his personal offshore account in Panama to a maritime logistics company based in Milwaukee."

Dominic’s body went cold. "Milwaukee."

"The riverfront," Elena whispered, her eyes meeting Dominic's with renewed terror. "Where you were ambushed six months ago. Where the stuffed rabbit was dropped."

"He’s going back to where he thinks he broke you," Miller said grimly. "He thinks if he can force a final showdown on your old trauma grounds, he can crush your morale completely."

Dominic stood up from his bench, his exoskeleton locking into position with a firm click. He walked over to Elena, stopping just inches from her. This time, he didn't reach for her hand; he simply looked into her eyes with absolute clarity and warmth.

"The haven isn't the house on Puget Sound, Elena," Dominic said, his voice rich and deep. "The haven is us. As long as we stand together, they cannot touch our children. I won't go back to being the Don. I won't use bạo lực out of rage. But I will end this—not with blood, but with justice."

Elena looked at him for a long moment, seeing the transformation in his eyes. The dark, wild fire of the mob boss was gone, replaced by the steady, unyielding strength of a husband and father protecting his family.

She stepped forward, wrapped her arms around his neck, and pressed her forehead against his chest.

"Then we go to Milwaukee," she murmured. "Together."
