Chapter 27 - THE BLIND SPOT

Two days passed.
The estate on the Puget Sound returned to its natural, tranquil rhythm. The coastal fog cleared completely, giving way to bright, crisp spring weather.
Elena sat on the open wooden terrace, her laptop open, but for the first time in months, she wasn't analyzing offshore bank logs or cryptographic transaction strings. She was reviewing architectural designs for a new timber-frame greenhouse she and Dominic planned to build near the garden.
Dominic walked out onto the deck without using his exoskeleton or a cane. His steps were slow, deliberate, but entirely steady.
He walked up behind her, setting a warm cup of cider on her table, then wrapped his arms gently around her shoulders, resting his chin against her cheek.
"No red lines today?" Dominic asked, a soft, teasing warmth in his voice.
"Zero red lines," Elena smiled, leaning back against his chest, enjoying the deep warmth of his body. "Just cedar wood, glass panels, and soil compositions for tomato plants."
"Leo wants to plant strawberries," Dominic noted, looking out at the lawn where their two sons were currently building a wooden fort out of cedar scraps with Marcus Miller.
"Strawberries it is," Elena chuckled softly.
Suddenly, a sleek black sedan pulled up the gravel driveway, stopping near the stone gate.
Marcus Miller walked over to the car, spoke briefly with the driver, and accepted a thick white envelope. He walked up the stone path toward the terrace, a broad, triumphant smile on his face.
"What is it, Marcus?" Dominic asked.
Miller held up the envelope. "Official final release from the Department of Justice, signed by the Attorney General herself. The Caruso estate file is officially closed, sealed, and archived under absolute national security protection. No more audits. No more inquiries. No more past."
Elena took the document, reading the official gold seal at the bottom:
CASE TERMINATED. NO FURTHER ACTION REQUIRED. FULL IMMUNITY CONFIRMED.
She looked up at Dominic, her brown eyes shining with pure, unadulterated joy.

"It's completely clean, Dominic," Elena whispered, her voice cracking slightly with emotion. "The ledger... our name... our life."
Dominic took the paper, holding it for a long moment in the warm Pacific sunlight, before setting it down on the table next to the cider mugs. He didn't need a legal document to tell him he was free. He had known it the moment he stood on the deck of that ghost ship and chose life over blood.
