Chapter 16 - A DANGEROUS GAME

The interior of Pier 4 cold storage was a maze of rusted steel container racks, frosted concrete pillars, and dripping overhead pipes. The air was frigid, hovering barely above freezing.
A single high-powered halogen light illuminated the center of the warehouse floor, where Dante Moretti stood beside a heavy, tactical satellite server unit. His navy suit was now rumpled, his hair unkempt, his eyes wide with frantic adrenaline.
"Where is the transport vessel?" Moretti screamed at his chief security officer, a massive Polish mercenary named Viktor. "The freighter was supposed to be at the mouth of the river twenty minutes ago!"
"The harbor master locked the locks, sir," Viktor replied calmly, checking his assault rifle. "Some kind of federal communication blackout. We have movement on the perimeter—"
Before Viktor could finish his sentence, a high-pitched, deafening screech echoed through the massive warehouse.
The non-lethal acoustic deterrent units Miller had deployed along the exterior walls activated simultaneously, flooding the concrete hall with intense, directional sonic waves. The mercenaries staggered, clutching their ears as their balance was instantly disrupted.
"Breach!" Viktor roared, firing blindly into the darkness overhead.
Shadows moved swiftly through the steam and mist of the freezing hall. Marcus Miller’s tactical team deployed flashbangs and non-lethal impact canisters, neutralizing three guards before they could regain their footing.
Amidst the confusion, Dominic stepped out from behind a line of rusted shipping containers. His mechanical exoskeleton hummed softly as he moved with absolute precision, shielding Elena as she darted toward the primary server console situated near Moretti’s desk.
"Dominic!" Moretti shrieked over the deafening hum of the acoustic waves, pulling a small silver pistol from his shoulder holster.
Dominic didn't draw a gun. He advanced steadily, his towering presence cutting through the mist like an unstoppable force.
Viktor raised his rifle toward Elena, but Dominic closed the distance in two lunging strides. With a swift, mechanical sweep of his arm, Dominic caught the barrel of the rifle, forcing it upward as a burst of bullets shattered the lights above. Using the amplified strength of his hydraulic joints, Dominic twisted the rifle out of the mercenary's grip and delivered a precise, heavy blow to Viktor’s chest, sending the massive man flying backward into a stack of wooden crates.
"Elena, now!" Dominic shouted, taking up a defensive stance in front of the server terminal.
Elena slammed her hardened laptop directly into the satellite hub's data port. Her fingers moved like lightning across the keyboard, bypassing the security firewalls with the override codes from the Tombaugh Trust.
"Accessing master node..." Elena narrated calmly, her voice entirely steady despite the gunfire echoing twenty yards away. "Bypassing Cayman Islands encryption... Authorizing liquid asset liquidation... Execution sequence active."
Moretti aimed his pistol directly at Elena’s head. "Stop! Stop typing, you bitch, or I’ll blow your brains out!"
Dominic stepped directly into Moretti’s line of sight, blocking Elena completely with his body.
"Shoot me, Dante," Dominic said softly, his silver eyes cold and clear as mountain ice. "Shoot the man who stands between you and your extinction."
Moretti’s hand trembled on the trigger. "You think you’re a hero now, Caruso? You’re a killer! You’re Vincent Caruso’s blood! You belong in the mud with the rest of us!"
"I used to think that," Dominic replied, taking one step closer, forcing Moretti to retreat toward the edge of the riverfront loading dock. "I spent ten years believing the ledger had to be written in blood. But my wife taught me something you will never understand, Dante."
Behind Dominic, Elena hit the final Enter key with a sharp, decisive strike.
A loud, continuous chime echoed from Moretti’s personal tablet on the desk. Line after line of red text began flashing across his screen:
[ACCOUNT BALANCE: $0.00]
[ASSETS FROZEN BY INTERPOL]
[WARRANT ISSUED: SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF NEW YORK]
[LIFELINE LIQUIDITY: TERMINATED]

Moretti stared at his screen in absolute horror. "My... my money... my empire..."
"It’s gone, Dante," Elena said, stepping beside Dominic, her tablet displaying the complete, irreversible erasure of his shadow wealth. "You’re not an empire anymore. You’re just a bankrupt criminal waiting for a prison sentence."
