Chapter 30 - THE UNBROKEN HORIZO

The morning arrived with a brilliance that seemed to paint the entire Pacific Northwest in liquid gold.
The sun rose over the snow-capped peaks of the Olympic Mountains, bathing the wide Washington sky in radiant, triumphant shades of warm amber, blazing copper, and deep, majestic violet.
On the open wooden deck overlooking the sound, the morning breakfast had just concluded. The long cedar table was filled with empty porcelain plates, small bowls of fresh blackberries picked from their own garden, and glasses of sweet apple juice.
The sound of children’s laughter drifted out across the green grass.
Leo and Lucas, their bare feet flying across the lawn without a single trace of fear, hesitation, or shadow, were currently playing tag near the deep purple lavender bushes. In Leo’s small hand was his favorite faded blue blanket, flying behind him like a superhero cape as he chased his younger brother toward the water’s edge, where a sturdy, beautiful wooden fence protected them from the shoreline.
Dominic sat in his comfortable wooden chair at the edge of the terrace. The titanium exoskeleton sat quietly inside the house, parked in a closet where it would gather dust for the rest of his long, peaceful life. His legs were strong, steady, supported by the power of his own healing and the unshakeable peace of his soul.
Elena stood behind him, her soft cardigan wrapped comfortably around her shoulders against the crisp morning sea breeze. She wrapped her arms tightly around his neck, resting her chin softly on his shoulder, her cheek pressed against his temple.
Dominic reached up, his large, warm hand wrapping tightly over hers, his gold wedding band glinting brightly in the brilliant morning light.
"Look at them, Dominic," Elena murmured softly, gesturing toward the lawn where Lucas had just tackled Leo into a soft, giggling heap of fresh green grass, both boys dissolving into loud, unstoppable laughter.
"They're free, Elena," Dominic whispered, his baritone voice rich with a deep, unbreakable peace that echoed across the water. "No shadow. No syndicate. No debts."
"The ledger was never the problem, Dominic," she said softly, her lips brushing the small scar near his temple—the very last remaining mark of a world he had left behind forever. "The problem was you thought you had to be an empire to keep us safe. You didn't realize that the only thing we ever needed from you... was your presence."
Dominic leaned his head back against her chest, listening to the steady, warm, beautiful rhythm of her heartbeat. His silver-gray eyes reflected the vast, wide, open horizon of the Pacific Ocean stretching out to infinity before them.
The stuffed rabbit that had landed beneath his wheels on that cold, dark riverfront in Milwaukee was gone, replaced forever by the real, living, radiant joy of the family he had bled to protect. The long, brutal night of the Chicago syndicates, the shadow treasuries, and the iron crowns had vanished into the past for good.

Above them, as the morning sun climbed higher into the clear, vast blue sky, casting its perfect, crystal-clear reflection over the calm, endless waters of the sound, Dominic took a deep, full, glorious breath of the sweet sea air.
Their eternal dawn had finally, beautifully arrived.
