Chapter 15 - THE MILWAUKEE CONNECTION

The riverfront in Milwaukee was just as bleak and unwelcoming as Dominic remembered.
A biting wind swept off Lake Michigan, whipping ice-cold rain through the rusted iron girders of the abandoned rail yards. Six months ago, this exact riverfront had been slick with blood and melting snow. It was here that Dominic’s former underboss had tried to execute him, throwing his disabled body toward the river while his youngest son’s stuffed toy fell beneath the wheels of his crashing car.
Now, as the black SUV idled under the shadow of the old grain silos, Dominic looked out at the dark water.
Elena sat beside him, holding an encrypted communications headset. "Miller’s team has established an outer surveillance perimeter two miles around the docklands. Local authorities have been quietly redirected away from the sector under a federal maritime exercise protocol."
"Moretti is inside the cold storage facility at Pier 4," Miller reported over the comms channel. "He’s brought eight heavily armed security operatives—ex-mercenaries hired through a private maritime firm in Poland. They’ve locked down the main entry points and set up directional acoustic sensors along the riverbank."
"He wants a siege," Dominic said, studying the thermal schematic of the facility on Elena's tablet. "He knows we won't wait for federal authorities to coordinate a long-drawn-out raid while he plans his escape via cargo ship."
"He’s waiting for you, Dominic," Elena said, her hand resting on his knee. "He built a psychological trap. He expects you to walk in there desperate, driven by anger and the memory of what happened six months ago."
"Then we won't give him what he expects," Dominic replied. He looked at Elena. "Show me the financial route you uncovered."
Elena tapped her screen, pulling up a complex flow diagram. "When Moretti transferred money to the Polish mercenaries, he bypassed the Liechtenstein pool because I had locked it. He used a direct private line from an unlisted account in the Cayman Islands—an account registered under the name Tombaugh Trust."
Dominic’s eyes widened slightly. "Tombaugh. That was my mother’s maiden name."
"Your mother died thirty years ago, Dominic," Elena said softly. "But her trust fund didn't. Your father didn't just hide a master ledger from Moretti’s father. He set up a secret counter-fund designed to automatically activate if anyone ever tried to steal the Caruso family's clean assets."
"My father didn't leave me money to fight a war," Dominic realized, awe mixing with his cold focus. "He left me the key to dismantle the entire syndicate from the inside without firing a single shot."
"Precisely," Elena smiled thinly, her eyes gleaming with tactical intellect. "The Tombaugh Trust contains a master override authorization for every holding company Moretti controls. If we can get physical access to the local terminal inside Pier 4—the terminal Moretti is using to coordinate his getaway—I can execute an automated liquidation order."
"Which will wipe out his offshore assets in real time," Miller added over the comms. "He’ll be left without a single dollar to pay his mercenaries, buy fuel, or secure safe passage."
"How long do you need at the terminal?" Dominic asked Elena.
"Four minutes," she replied without hesitation. "Give me four uninterrupted minutes at that server node, and Dante Moretti will be bankrupt, powerless, and exposed to international arrest warrants before sunrise."

Dominic looked out at the rain-slicked docks of Pier 4. The ghosts of his past were waiting inside that cold, dark warehouse. But he wasn't the broken, terrified man who had bled onto the snow six months ago. He had Elena. He had his sons. He had a future.
"Marcus," Dominic called into his headset. "Activate the non-lethal acoustic pulse units around the pier. We move in three minutes."
