Chapter 29 - THE FINAL AUDIT

By midnight, the boys were fast asleep in their rooms upstairs, tucked under their soft wool blankets with their favorite storybooks resting on their nightstands.

Downstairs, the fire had burned down to a bed of glowing, deep orange embers.

Dominic and Elena stood together by the large glass window looking out at the dark water. The rain had stopped, leaving the night sky crystal clear, dotted with millions of brilliant, diamond-sharp stars that reflected perfectly off the calm surface of the sound.

Elena held a small leather-bound notebook in her hand—not a mob ledger, not a financial forensic audit, but a private journal she had kept since the day they arrived in Washington six months ago.

She turned to the very last page.

On the white paper, written in her neat, precise handwriting, was a simple list of numbers:

ASSETS: 1 HOME. 1 GARDEN. 2 SONS. 1 UNBROKEN PROMISE.

DEBTS: $0.00.

BALANCE: ABSOLUTE FREEDOM.

Dominic leaned over her shoulder, reading the page under the faint starlight. A quiet, beautiful chuckle rumbled deep in his chest.

"Is that your final audit, Mrs. Caruso?" Dominic asked softly, wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her back against his chest.

"That is the only audit that matters, Don Caruso," Elena replied, leaning her head back against his shoulder, her eyes closing as she felt his strong, warm heartbeat steady against her back.

Dominic reached down, taking the small leather notebook from her hand, and set it gently on the wooden windowsill.

He didn't need to check the numbers anymore. He didn't need to look over his shoulder. The long, bloody night that had begun thirty years ago in the concrete streets of Chicago had finally dissolved into the deep, dark ocean, leaving nothing behind but the clean, pure truth of the family they had built together.

"Thank you, Elena," Dominic whispered into her hair, his voice filled with a reverence so deep it brought sweet tears to her eyes. "For saving my life. For giving me my sons. For teaching me how to live."

Elena turned in his arms, reaching up to frame his face with both of her hands, her thumbs gently tracing the small scar near his left temple.

"You saved yourself, Dominic," she whispered back, looking deep into his silver-gray eyes. "You just needed someone to hold the light while you found your way home."
