Chapter 18 - THE PRICE OF FREEDOM

The aftermath of the Milwaukee raid moved with dizzying speed.

Federal prosecutors, armed with the microfilms from the Chicago sub-basement and the complete financial trails decrypted by Elena, launched the largest sweeping indictment against organized crime money laundering in a generation. Over forty high-level executives, dirty politicians, and shell corporation managers across New York, Chicago, and Zurich were taken into custody within forty-eight hours.

The shadow treasury—three hundred million dollars of blood money—was legally impounded and redirected into a court-monitored restitution fund for victims of organized crime.

In a quiet conference room at the Federal Courthouse in downtown Milwaukee, Dominic and Elena sat across from the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois. Marcus Miller sat beside them, a thick folder of legal immunity agreements spread across the table.

The prosecutor, a formidable woman named Evelyn Vance, looked through Dominic’s thick, dark file, then looked up at him over her glasses.

"Mr. Caruso," Prosecutor Vance began, her tone serious. "Under normal circumstances, your past actions in Chicago would keep my office busy prosecuting you for the next decade."

"Under normal circumstances, prosecutor," Miller interrupted smoothly, "Dominic Caruso would be dead, and Dante Moretti would currently control a half-billion-dollar criminal enterprise hidden inside American private equity."

Vance raised a hand to silence Miller, her eyes remaining fixed on Dominic and Elena.

"Mrs. Caruso," Vance said, turning her focus to Elena. "Your forensic work over the last seventy-two hours did something three federal agencies failed to achieve in thirty years. You mapped the entire financial backbone of the old Commission. Because of your work, those accounts are gone forever."

"I didn't do it for the Department of Justice, Prosecutor Vance," Elena said quietly, her hand tightly intertwined with Dominic’s beneath the table. "I did it to protect my family."

Vance closed the heavy file with a soft sigh. She pulled out a fountain pen and signed three copies of a legal document sitting before her.

"This is a full, unconditional Non-Prosecution Agreement," Vance declared, sliding the papers across the table. "Dominic Caruso is officially declared fully cooperated, retired, and cleared of all active federal inquiries. Your past records are sealed under absolute judicial protective order. As far as the United States government is concerned, Dominic Caruso is a private citizen living peacefully in Washington state."

Dominic looked at the signed document. The words on the paper were clear, precise, and absolute: FULL IMMUNITY AND RELEASE.

He reached out, his thumb running over the smooth black ink of the federal seal.

"The ledger is clean," Dominic whispered softly, his voice trembling slightly with an emotion he hadn't allowed himself to feel in decades.

"The ledger is closed, Mr. Caruso," Vance smiled gently. "Go home to your sons."
