Chapter 11 - The Echoes of the Past

The sun-drenched wedding on the Gold Coast had promised a lifetime of peace, but peace, Jessica soon learned, was a fragile glass sculpture in a house built on concrete foundations.

Two weeks after their wedding, the white marquee had been packed away, and the tulips in the courtyard were in full bloom. Giovanni had officially transitioned the Fierro empire into Fierro Global Logistics & Holdings. Every morning, he wore tailored business suits instead of tactical gear. Yet, the shadows of Chicago did not simply vanish because a man signed a few legal documents.

It was a Tuesday evening when the first crack in their new reality appeared.

Jessica was in the kitchen of their sprawling estate, helping Lily construct a cardboard castle for a school project. The warmth of the home was tangible—the scent of roasted garlic and rosemary filled the air, and classical music played softly from the built-in speakers. It was everything Jessica had ever dreamed of during her darkest years with Tyler.

Suddenly, the heavy oak front door opened. Giovanni walked in, but his posture wasn't that of the relaxed husband she had grown to love over the past months. His shoulders were tense, his jaw tightly set. Behind him stood Marco, his loyal head of security, whose face was grim.

"Lily, sweetie," Jessica said softly, patting her daughter's head. "Why don't you take your castle up to your playroom for a bit? Mommy needs to talk to Daddy."

"Okay, Mommy! Hi, Daddy!" Lily chirped, hugging Giovanni’s leg before running upstairs.

Giovanni kissed the top of Lily's head, but the moment she was out of sight, the warmth drained from his amber eyes. He looked at Jessica, a deep sigh escaping his lips.

"What is it, Gio?" Jessica asked, walking over and placing her hands on his chest. She could feel his heart beating rapidly. "What happened?"

"A shipping container belonging to our newly unionized port division in Miami was seized this morning," Giovanni said, his voice low and gravelly. "The federal authorities found contraband. Highly illegal cargo. The kind of stuff we officially stopped moving six months ago."

Jessica’s blood ran cold. "But you dissolved those factions. You audited every single route."

"Someone bypassed our new security protocols," Marco chimed in from the doorway, his voice tight. "They used our legacy codes—codes that only a few high-ranking members of the old syndicate possessed. It’s a setup, Jessica. Someone wants the federal government to believe that the 'legitimate' Fierro Global is just a front for the old ways."

"Who?" Jessica asked, her mind racing. "Who would have access to those codes?"

"That's what we need to find out," Giovanni said, taking her hands and kissing her knuckles. "But that's not all. The local police precinct received an anonymous tip today. An allegation that I secured the custody of Lily through coercion and bribery of court officials."

Jessica gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "Tyler," she whispered.

"We don't know for sure," Giovanni said, his eyes darkening with a dangerous spark that Jessica hadn't seen since the days of their fake marriage. "But he was at the wedding gates. He saw what we have. A desperate, broke man with a child he can barely feed is the perfect pawn for someone who wants to tear me down."

"He wouldn't dare," Jessica said, anger replacing her fear. "He signed away his rights. He chose Vanessa and his greed over us."

"Never underestimate the stupidity of a desperate man, Jess," Giovanni warned. "I have my legal team working on the shipping container issue. But the threat to our family... that, I handle personally. I want you to stay inside the estate. Security is doubled starting tonight."

That night, as Jessica lay in Giovanni's arms, the heavy silence of the house felt different. The iron gates outside no longer felt like a grand entrance—they felt like a fortress under siege. She looked at her husband’s sleeping face, tracing the faint scar on his chin. They had fought so hard to reach the light. She would not let the darkness drag them back down.
