Chapter 14 - The Custody Confrontation

The courtyard was bathed in the harsh red and blue flashing lights of two police cruisers.
Giovanni and Jessica walked down the grand steps of the estate, hand-in-hand. Lily was upstairs with her nanny, safely locked in a panic room.
Tyler stood near the iron gates, flanked by a slick-looking lawyer in a cheap grey suit and two police officers. Tyler looked nervous, his eyes darting around the luxurious property with a mixture of envy and fear. Behind him, parked on the street, was a battered sedan where Vanessa sat in the passenger seat, clutching her baby.
"Can I help you, officers?" Giovanni asked, his voice calm, polite, and completely devoid of the menace he usually carried. He sounded like a law-abiding citizen concerned about a disturbance.
"Mr. Fierro," one of the officers said, looking uncomfortable. "We have a court order here. Mr. Tyler Vance has filed an emergency petition alleging that his daughter, Lily Vance, is being held in an unsafe environment and that his previous custody relinquishment was signed under threat of violence."
The lawyer stepped forward, smirking. "My client wishes to execute his right to emergency temporary custody until a formal hearing can be scheduled next week. We demand the child be released to her biological father immediately."
Jessica felt a surge of maternal fury, but she kept her composure. She stepped forward, looking directly at Tyler.
"Tyler, look at me," Jessica said, her voice carrying a chilling stillness. "Do you really want to do this? Do you want to drag our daughter into a media circus? Do you think the people funding your lawyers actually care about you or Lily?"
Tyler flinched, but his lawyer quickly cut in. "Mrs. Fierro, do not attempt to intimidate my client—"
"I am speaking to my ex-husband, counselor. Be quiet," Jessica snapped, her tone so authoritative that the lawyer actually silenced himself. She turned back to Tyler. "You know what Giovanni is capable of when he is crossed, Tyler. But more importantly, you know what I am capable of when it comes to my daughter. If you take her tonight, you are signing your own death warrant—not from Giovanni, but from the people you think are protecting you. You think Matteo Fierro is a philanthropist?"
At the mention of Matteo’s name, Tyler’s face drained of color. He looked at his lawyer, then back at Jessica. "I... I don't know what you're talking about."
"Mr. Vance," the police officer interrupted, sensing the sudden shift in tension. "Do you wish to proceed with the emergency extraction? We have the warrant, but if there is a dispute over the legitimacy—"
"He knows the warrant is based on perjury," Giovanni said smoothly, stepping up beside Jessica. He pulled out his phone and played an audio recording. It was a recording Marco had secured just an hour prior—a wiretapped conversation between Tyler’s lawyer and one of Matteo’s known associates, discussing the payoff for filing the false emergency petition.
The lawyer’s eyes went wide. "That... that is illegally obtained! It’s inadmissible!"
"In a criminal trial, perhaps," Giovanni whispered, his amber eyes locked on the lawyer. "But in a federal conspiracy investigation? The FBI will find it very interesting. I suggest you take your client and leave my property before I have my legal team file charges of extortion, perjury, and conspiracy against both of you."
The police officers, realizing they were being used as pawns in a federal-level chess game, immediately stepped back. "We’re leaving, Mr. Fierro. This is a civil matter. Figure it out in court."
As the officers walked back to their cars, Tyler panicked. "Wait! You can't just leave me here!"

"Get in the car, Tyler," Jessica said coldly. "Before we decide to stop being nice."
Tyler scrambled back to his sedan, and within moments, the flashing lights disappeared down the driveway. They had won the first battle, but Jessica knew the war was far from over. Matteo would not stop at a failed custody petition.
