Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The warehouse fell into a tense, suffocating silence. Francesca’s hitmen raised their weapons, scanning the shadows with flashlights.

"Giovanni!" Francesca called out, her voice betraying a hint of nervousness. "Step into the light! Show me your hands, or the girl dies right now!"

A flashlight beam cut through the center of the warehouse, revealing Giovanni standing near a massive stack of shipping containers. He was alone. His coat was gone, his black shirt torn, revealing the blood-stained bandage over his ribs. In his right hand, he held a sleek black flash drive.

"Here are the encryption keys to every account, every legal document, and every property owned by the Fierro Syndicate," Giovanni said, his voice flat, completely devoid of emotion. "It’s everything you ever wanted, Francesca. Let them go."

Francesca gestured to one of her men. "Go get it."

The thug cautiously approached Giovanni, his gun raised. As he reached out to take the flash drive, Giovanni’s movement was a blur of lethal precision.

He grabbed the man's wrist, snapping it with a sickening crack, disarmed him in a fraction of a second, and fired two silenced shots into the chest of the second hitman standing near Francesca.

"Kill them!" Francesca shrieked, diving behind a metal crate.

The warehouse erupted into chaos. The remaining hitmen opened fire, but the lights suddenly went out completely as Marco and the Fierro tactical team breached the upper windows, rappelling down with flashbangs and automatic weapons.

"Jessica!" Giovanni’s voice roared through the gunfire.

I felt hands cutting my ropes. It was Marco. "I've got you, Mrs. Fierro. Come on!" He dragged me, Camila, and Lily behind a heavily armored steel container, shielding us from the crossfire.

Through the gaps in the metal, I watched Giovanni move like a shadow demon. He didn't flinch from the bullets. He advanced with an unstoppable, terrifying rage, taking down Francesca’s mercenaries one by one until only one person was left standing.

Francesca scrambled backward, her gold gown torn and covered in dust, her pistol shaking as she pointed it at Giovanni.

Giovanni walked up to her, his gun leveled at her forehead. His amber eyes were completely dead, filled with the cold indifference of a judge delivering a final sentence.

"Giovanni, please," Francesca begged, crying. "We're family. Your father wouldn't want this—"

"You forfeited the right to call us family the second you threatened my wife and daughter," Giovanni said softly.

He didn't pull the trigger. Instead, he looked over his shoulder at Marco. "Take her. Turn her over to the federal authorities with the dossier we compiled on her illegal arms smuggling. She will spend the rest of her miserable life in a maximum-security cell."

Francesca screamed and cursed as Marco’s men dragged her away in handcuffs, completely broken.

The gunfire stopped. The warehouse was silent.

Giovanni dropped his gun, his knees buckling slightly as the exhaustion and the strain on his wounded ribs finally caught up to him.

"Giovanni!" I cried, breaking away from Marco and running across the floor. I caught him just as he sank to the ground, wrapping my arms around him, pulling his head into my lap.

"Jessica..." he gasped, his hand reaching up to touch my face, his fingers trembling. "Are you... are you hurt? Lily?"

"We're safe. We're perfectly safe because of you," I sobbed, kissing his forehead, his cheeks, his bloodied lips. "I'm sorry I doubted you. I'm so sorry, Giovanni. I love you. Please stay with me."

A small, hesitant voice broke through our tears.

"Mommy? Is the bad lady gone?"

Lily stood a few feet away, holding Camila’s hand. She looked at Giovanni, her blue eyes wide.

Giovanni forced a weak smile, holding out his arm. "She's gone, Lily. The castle is safe now."

Lily broke away from Camila and ran forward, throwing her small arms around Giovanni’s neck, burying her face in his shoulder. "Thank you for saving us, prince."

Giovanni buried his face in her hair, a single, pure tear rolling down his cheek as he squeezed both of us tight against his chest.
