Chapter 2 - The Terms of Engagement

The interior of the armored sedan was dead silent, smelling of expensive leather and faint tobacco. Outside, the neon lights of downtown Chicago blurred through the rain-streaked windows. I sat pressed against the passenger door, my mind racing as fast as the tires on the wet asphalt.

"You can slow down your heart rate, Jessica. You're perfectly safe," Giovanni said, breaking the silence. He had undone the top button of his shirt and was poured two fingers of amber liquid from a hidden crystal decanter in the armrest. He offered one to me.

"Safe?" I mocked, ignoring the glass. "You just threatened to ruin my ex-husband's life in front of my entire family, insulted a terrifyingly powerful older woman, and told the whole world we're married. I am a pediatric nurse, Giovanni. My biggest daily crisis is convincing a five-year-old to take chewable antibiotics. This is not my life."

"It is now," he said smoothly, taking a sip of his drink. "At least for the next few months."

"I never agreed to this! You asked for a dance, not a lifetime commitment to a fake identity!"

"I asked for an ally. And you needed one." He turned his head to look at me, his gaze calculating. "Let's be honest with each other. Tyler Brooks humiliated you. Your family treats you like an unwanted obligation. If you walk back into that world tomorrow as the lonely single mom, nothing changes. But if you walk in as Mrs. Giovanni Fierro... no one will ever dare look down on you again."

I hated how right he was. The memory of Tyler's cruel words—you threw away your future—still burned like acid in my throat. But I wasn't foolish.

"Who are you, Giovanni?" I asked quietly. "The older man at the table looked terrified when he heard your name. Those men in the suits... they weren't security guards. What kind of 'business' are you really in?"

Giovanni placed his glass down. His expression darkened, the shadows of the passing streetlights carving sharp lines into his face. "My family built Chicago's infrastructure, Jessica. Shipping, logistics, real estate. But in our world, legitimate business requires a heavy hand to keep the vultures away. I am the head of the Fierro Syndicate. I handle the problems the police can't, and I protect what is mine."

The realization hit me like a physical blow. The Fierro name. I had heard whispers in the hospital emergency room from paramedics talking about the shadow rulers of the city’s underbelly. He wasn't just a wealthy businessman. He was the most feared man in Chicago.

"I need to get out of this car," I said, reaching for the door handle.

"The doors are locked from the console, Jessica. Sit down." His voice wasn't angry, but it possessed an absolute authority that made my hand freeze. "I am not going to hurt you. I don't hurt women, and I don't hurt children. I am offering you a business arrangement."

"What kind of arrangement?" I whispered, my hand slowly dropping from the handle.

"My aunt Francesca wants to unseat me from the head of the company. She thinks I am too ruthless, too uncontrollable. She wanted to use Elena Vance to bind me to a contract that would dilute my power. By introducing you as my wife, I have disrupted her timeline. But she will investigate you. She will look for every crack in our story."

"Then she'll find out the truth in five minutes," I pointed out. "I live in a one-bedroom apartment in Logan Square. My daughter Lily goes to a public daycare."

"She won't find anything if we play our cards right," Giovanni countered. "Tomorrow, you and Lily will move into my estate in Gold Coast. We will file backdated paperwork for a private marriage license in Cozumel. I will provide you with a monthly allowance that exceeds your annual salary. Lily will be enrolled in the finest private school in the city. And in exchange, you will attend family dinners, public galas, and charity events on my arm. We play the devoted couple for six months. After that, we file for an amicable divorce. You walk away with a multi-million dollar settlement, a trust fund for your daughter, and total financial freedom for the rest of your life."

I stared at him, completely stunned. The numbers he was hinting at could save my daughter from the generational poverty that had trapped me. It meant never having to choose between paying the heating bill or buying groceries. It meant Lily could go to college without a mountain of debt.

"And what happens during those six months?" I asked, my voice trembling. "Do we... do we share a bed?"

Giovanni looked at me, his eyes softening just a fraction, a touch of genuine respect in his gaze. "I am a lot of things, Jessica, but I am not a monster. You will have your own wing of the house. I will never touch you without your consent. This is a contract. Nothing more."

The car pulled up to the curb of my modest apartment building. Through the rain, I could see the flickering fluorescent light of the lobby.

"You don't have to decide tonight," Giovanni said, handing me a sleek black business card with a single phone number embossed in gold. "But my aunt’s men are likely already watching this building. If you're in, call me by noon tomorrow. I'll have a security team fetch your belongings."

I took the card, its weight heavy in my palm. "And if I say no?"

May you like

"Then I will ensure Tyler Brooks never bothers you again as a thank-you for the dance, and I will find another way to deal with my aunt. The choice is yours, Jessica."

I opened the car door, the cold wind whipping my hair across my face. I didn't look back as I hurried into the building, the golden card clutched tightly in my hand.
