Chapter 18 - The Aftermath

With Matteo in federal custody and Tyler cooperating fully with the prosecution, the conspiracy against Fierro Global collapsed like a house of cards.

The FBI officially cleared Giovanni’s company of all contraband charges, publicly acknowledging that the illegal shipment had been a targeted frame-job by a corrupt faction of the old syndicate. The company’s stock rebounded overnight, higher than it had ever been.

A week later, Jessica was sitting in the parlor of their estate, sipping tea, when she received a visitor.

It was Vanessa.

She looked exhausted, with dark circles under her eyes, holding her newborn baby in a worn carrier. She no longer had the arrogant, spiteful attitude she had displayed months ago. She looked like a woman who had reached the absolute end of her rope.

"Jessica," Vanessa said, her voice barely a whisper. "Thank you for seeing me."

"I only agreed to this because of the baby, Vanessa," Jessica said, gesturing to a chair. "Sit down."

Vanessa sat, cradling her child. "I... I wanted to apologize. For everything. For the wedding, for Tyler's actions... we were so broke, Jessica. The baby had medical bills, and Tyler was desperate. When Matteo’s people approached him, he thought it was an easy way out. He didn't realize how dangerous those people were."

"Greed makes people blind, Vanessa," Jessica said softly, looking at the innocent sleeping baby. "Tyler is facing five to ten years in a federal penitentiary. What are you going to do?"

"I'm leaving Chicago," Vanessa said, tears spilling over her cheeks. "My mother has a small place in Ohio. I’m going to raise my son there. I just... I wanted to ask you one thing. Please don't let Lily hate Tyler. He’s a fool, and a coward, but... he did love her once."

Jessica looked at Vanessa, feeling a sudden wave of pity. The anger she had held for so long finally evaporated, leaving behind only a profound sense of gratitude for the life she now possessed.

"I won't teach Lily to hate him," Jessica promised. "When she is old enough, I will tell her the truth—that her father made mistakes, but he ultimately chose to do the right thing by putting the bad people away. But she is Giovanni’s daughter now, Vanessa. That will never change."

Vanessa nodded, wiping her tears. "Thank you, Jessica. You... you really are a good person."

As Vanessa left the estate, Jessica felt a deep sense of closure. The ghosts of her past were finally laid to rest.
