Chapter 17 - The Rescue and the Reckoning

The sound of screeching tires and breaking glass shattered the night.

Jessica watched from the SUV as SWAT vehicles and unmarked police cars descended on the meatpacking plant. Sirens wailed, and the night air was filled with the shouts of law enforcement officers storming the building.

Within minutes, the perimeter was secured.

Jessica defied Marco's orders and stepped out of the vehicle, walking toward the entrance of the building as paramedics wheeled out several injured patrons.

Finally, two officers emerged, escorting a trembling, handcuffed Tyler. He was covered in sweat and blood, but he was alive. Behind him, Matteo Fierro was led out in heavy chains, his face twisted in a mask of pure fury.

Matteo spotted Jessica standing near the police line. He stopped, glaring at her with venomous hatred. "You... you think you've won? You think a middle-class nurse can survive in our world? Giovanni will destroy you, just like he destroys everything he touches."

"My husband is a better man than you will ever be," Jessica said, her voice calm and steady. "And unlike you, he actually has a family to go home to. Enjoy your cell, Matteo."

Tyler looked up as he was led past her. His eyes were wide, filled with a mixture of shame, gratitude, and absolute defeat. "Jessica... I'm sorry. I’m so sorry. They were going to kill me."

"I didn't save you for your sake, Tyler," Jessica said coldly. "I did it so Lily would never have to grow up knowing her biological father was a criminal who died in a basement. You are going to prison for conspiracy, Tyler. Cooperate with the feds, tell them everything about Matteo, and maybe you'll see your new baby grow up. But you are never, ever coming near my daughter again."

Tyler nodded tears streaming down his face. "I promise. I'll tell them everything."

As the police cars drove away, a sleek black sedan pulled up to the curb. The door opened, and Giovanni stepped out.

He didn't look at the police, or the crime scene, or the crowd. His eyes were locked entirely on Jessica. He walked over to her with long, urgent strides, pulling her into his arms and holding her so tightly she could barely breathe.

"You are insane," he whispered into her hair, his voice shaking with emotion. "You could have been killed."

"I had Marco," she replied, hugging him back just as tightly. "And I had to protect our family, Gio. We did it. It's over."

"Almost," Giovanni said, pulling back to look at her. "But there is still one final loose end."
