Chapter 2 - The Wrath of the Sovereign

The silence in the grand ballroom was so total that the soft hum of the air filtration system sounded like a roaring engine. Victoria’s breath caught in her throat, her eyes widening in absolute, paralyzing horror as the pieces of the puzzle crashed down upon her.

Mother.

The frail, simply dressed woman she had just tried to backhand because her wheelchair was "in the way" wasn't a wandering vagrant or a lower-class crasher. She was Margaret Sterling. The reclusive matriarch of the Sterling dynasty, the woman whose name was etched onto the cornerstone of every major university, hospital, and museum in the city.

"I am perfectly fine, Alexander," Margaret said, her voice soft but carrying a deep, aristocratic resonance that matched her son's. She turned her silver head, her gentle eyes settling on Elena, who was standing three paces away with her hands clasped tightly over her white apron. "But only because this brave young woman intervened. If it weren't for her, your guest would have succeeded in humiliating me."

Alexander slowly rose to his feet. As he turned back to face Victoria, the tenderness vanished, replaced by an aura of pure, unadulterated devastation.

"Alexander, please!" Victoria cried, taking a frantic step backward, her hands trembling so violently she dropped her champagne flute. The crystal shattered on the floor, the sparkling liquid pooling around her expensive shoes. "I didn't know! I swear to you, I didn't know she was your mother! She wasn't wearing the family jewels, and she—"

"So you only afford human decency to those wearing diamonds, Miss Vance?" Alexander’s voice was dangerously quiet, a freezing whisper that caused several corporate executives in the front row to look away.

"No! That's not what I meant!" Victoria gasped, looking around the room for her father, the wealthy industrialist Richard Vance. But Richard was currently standing near the bar, his face pale, deliberately looking at the ceiling to distance himself from his daughter’s social suicide.

"Your father's company funded seventy percent of this gala, you said?" Alexander asked, taking a single, measured step forward. His shadow completely engulfed Victoria. "By tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m., the Sterling Bank will call in every outstanding commercial loan currently held by Vance Industries. By noon, your father’s shipping licenses at my ports will be permanently revoked. Let us see how much of this palace you own when your family is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy."

"Alexander, you can't do this!" Victoria sobbed, the tears ruining her heavy mascara, dark streaks running down her pale cheeks. "It was a mistake! A misunderstanding!"

"Marco," Alexander barked, not breaking eye contact with the trembling socialite.

His massive head of security stepped forward from the shadows. "Yes, Mr. Sterling?"

"Remove this garbage from my property. If she or any member of her immediate family attempts to cross the perimeter gates again, have them arrested for criminal trespass."

As Marco and two uniform guards grabbed Victoria by her upper arms, dragging her screaming down the center aisle of the ballroom, Alexander turned his attention to Elena. His icy gray eyes scanned her simple maid's uniform, noting the red marks on her skin where Victoria had struggled against her grip.

"What is your name, Miss?" Alexander asked, his tone shifting into something deep, respectful, and intensely focused.

"Elena, sir. Elena Winters," she replied, keeping her gaze grounded.

"You risked everything to protect my mother tonight, Elena," Alexander said, stepping closer, his presence warm and overwhelming. "In this palace, loyalty like yours isn't just rewarded. It changes everything."
