Chapter 5 - The Poisoned Ledger

The crisis struck on a Thursday morning.

Elena had just prepared Madam Margaret's morning tea—a blend of chamomile and fresh honey—when the grand doors of the main foyer were thrown open with a loud, metallic bang. Six agents from the State Department of Health and Human Services, accompanied by four armed police officers, marched into the palace.

At the front of the group was Detective Harrison, a corrupt official who had been on Richard Vance's payroll for over a decade.

"We have a warrant to search the premises and place Margaret Sterling into immediate protective state custody," Harrison announced, holding up a red-stamped document as Alexander descended the grand staircase, his face resembling a thundercloud.

"You are stepping into my home without my permission, Harrison," Alexander said, his voice dropping into a register that made the guards look at each other nervously. "Explain this intrusion before I have you stripped of your badge."

"An anonymous tip backed by bank records, Mr. Sterling," Harrison sneered, waving a printed ledger. "Your newly appointed medical coordinator, Elena Winters, has just received a transfer of two hundred thousand dollars into her personal account from a dummy corporation linked to a pharmaceutical supplier. We have reason to believe she is administering unauthorized sedatives to your mother to induce cognitive incompetence for financial gain."

Elena, who had just descended the stairs with Margaret's tea tray, froze on the landing. The porcelain cups rattled against the silver. "That's a lie! I have never accepted a single dollar outside my official salary!"

"Search her room!" Harrison commanded his men.

Within ten minutes, an officer returned from the staff quarters carrying a small, amber vial that had been planted in the back of Elena's closet earlier that morning by a bribed laundry worker. "Found this behind the vents, sir. It's liquid digitalis. In small doses, it causes confusion and cardiac stress in the elderly."

"Elena Winters, you are under arrest for the attempted poisoning of an endangered adult," Harrison said, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.

Elena’s vision blurred with tears of absolute panic. She looked at Alexander, her voice cracking. "Mr. Sterling, I swear to you, I didn't do this. I would never hurt her."

Alexander stood at the bottom of the stairs, his face completely unreadable, his eyes locked onto hers. The silence stretched for five agonizing seconds. To Harrison and the officers, it looked like the billionaire was processing the ultimate betrayal.

But Alexander walked past Harrison, stepping up to the landing until he stood directly in front of Elena. He didn't look at the vial or the ledger. He reached out, his massive hand gently covering her trembling fingers on the tea tray.

"I know you didn't," Alexander said, his voice echoing through the foyer with absolute, unshakable certainty. "Harrison, you have exactly three minutes to get your men off my property before my legal team lands a federal injunction on your governor's desk. You played your hand too early, Vance."
