Chapter 8 - The Flowering of the Palace

With the Vance conspiracy entirely dismantled and Richard and Victoria facing twenty-year prison sentences without the possibility of bail, a profound, beautiful peace settled over the Grand Palace.
The public narrative surrounding Elena had transformed overnight. She was no longer the "predatory maid"; she was celebrated as the "Guardian of the Dynasty," an icon of integrity who had withstood the terrifying psychological warfare of the city’s most corrupt elite.
Six months after the courtyard press conference, the autumn leaves had given way to a brilliant, blooming spring. The palace gardens were filled with the scent of jasmine and white lilies, chosen specifically by Elena to brighten Madam Margaret’s daily walks.
Elena stood in the center of the library, reviewing the medical logistics for Margaret's new physical therapy routine. Her brother had been moved to the top neurological institute in the country, his medical expenses fully covered by a permanent medical foundation Alexander had established in Elena’s name.
"You are working too hard, Elena," a deep voice said from the doorway.
She looked up, her smile instant and radiant as Alexander entered the room. He had removed his suit jacket, his shirtsleeves rolled up, looking softer and more relaxed than she had ever seen him.
"I am just organizing the schedule, Mr. Sterling," she said, her cheeks turning a soft pink as he stepped closer.
"I thought I asked you to call me Alexander six months ago," he murmured, standing right in front of her desk, his icy gray eyes now warm with an unmistakable, intense affection.
"It feels strange to use your first name in this room," Elena laughed softly, her eyes dropping to his hands. "This is the room where you sign international shipping treaties."
Alexander reached down, his large, warm fingers gently sliding beneath her chin, tilting her face up until her green eyes were locked into his. "This is the room where I realized that all the wealth in the world is completely worthless if you don't have someone holding your hand through the storm. Elena, you saved my mother, but you did something much more difficult—you saved me from becoming a monster like the people I fight."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. Inside was a magnificent, flawless emerald ring surrounded by a delicate band of woven platinum white gold.

"Alexander," Elena gasped, her breath catching in her throat.
"I don't want a companion for my mother anymore, Elena," Alexander said, his voice dropping into a rough, emotional baritone that shook her to her core. "I want a partner for my life. I want you to be the mistress of this palace. Will you marry me?"
