Chapter 4 - The Corporate Retaliation

While Elena settled into her new role, providing Margaret with the genuine companionship and meticulous care she had lacked for years, a dark storm was brewing in the financial district.

Richard Vance wasn't a man who accepted ruin quietly. The liquidation of his company’s assets by the Sterling Bank had pushed him into a corner, and a cornered wolf always bares its teeth. He held an emergency meeting in a private, smoky lounge downtown with three of Alexander Sterling’s most bitter corporate competitors.

"Alexander thinks he is untouchable because he controls the real estate and the ports," Richard snarled, his face haggard, a glass of dark scotch trembling in his hand. "But his mother is his Achilles' heel. Everyone knows he keeps her locked away in that palace because her mental stability is fragile since his father's death."

"And what do you propose, Richard?" one of the executives asked, blowing a ring of cigar smoke into the dim air. "Alexander has military-grade security around that perimeter. You can't get an assassin past those gates."

"We don't need an assassin," Victoria Vance spoke up from the corner of the lounge, her face heavily made up to hide the bruising of her ego, her eyes full of a psychotic, burning hatred. "We need a scandal. There is a new girl in that house—a maid named Elena Winters. She was suddenly promoted to the inner circle after the gala. If we can make it look like she is poisoning the old woman to rewrite the Sterling will, the state boards will launch an immediate investigation. They will raid the palace, remove the mother to a state facility, and freeze Alexander’s personal trusts during the inquiry."

Richard looked at his daughter, a slow, malicious grin spreading across his face. "The girl has a brother in a municipal clinic in Ohio. He relies on expensive experimental drugs. It would be very easy to manufacture a paper trail showing she received a massive, unexplained influx of cash from an offshore account right before Margaret’s health takes a sudden... downturn."

Back at the palace, Elena was entirely unaware of the trap being laid for her. She was currently walking through the rose gardens with Margaret, the elderly woman laughing softly as Elena recounted a humorous story from her childhood.

Alexander watched them from the balcony of his study, his hands resting on the stone balustrade.

"She is remarkable, isn't she, sir?" Marco said, stepping up behind his employer. "The staff says the palace feels different now. Less like a fortress, more like a home."

"She is a variable I didn't account for, Marco," Alexander murmured, his eyes tracking the way the afternoon sunlight caught the copper highlights in Elena’s brown hair. "She has no armor, yet she walks through this palace with more courage than any executive I've ever met. Keep an extra eye on her, Marco. The Vance family hasn't left the city yet, and I don't trust the silence."
