Chapter 3 - The Shift in the Winds

By the next morning, the social landscape of the city had experienced a tectonic shift. The news of Victoria Vance's public disgrace and the subsequent collapse of Vance Industries' stock occupied every financial headline. But inside the Grand Palace, a different kind of transformation was taking place.
Elena stood in the staff locker room, staring at the neatly folded silk garments resting on her bench. Beside them lay a pair of soft Italian leather shoes and a gold security badge bearing her photograph.
"You're moving to the residential wing, Elena," the head housekeeper said, her voice containing a new, hesitant respect. "Mr. Sterling’s private orders. You are no longer part of the floor staff. You have been appointed as Madam Margaret's personal companion and coordinator."
Elena's heart raced as she ran her fingers over the smooth silk. For three years, she had worked sixteen-hour days, sending every dollar back to her hometown to pay for her younger brother's medical treatments. She had survived by being invisible, by absorbing the casual cruelty of the wealthy without a word. Now, she was being pulled directly into the inner sanctum of the most powerful family in the state.
When she entered Madam Margaret’s private sunroom on the third floor, she found the elderly woman sitting by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the manicured gardens below. Alexander stood beside her, a cup of espresso in his hand, listening intently to his mother.
"Ah, Elena," Margaret smiled, her face lighting up with genuine warmth as she noticed her entrance. "Come in, my dear. Sit with us."
Elena hesitated, looking at Alexander, who nodded smoothly, pulling out a velvet armchair for her himself. The sheer courtesy of the gesture made her breath hitch.
"I have been telling Alexander that I refuse to return to the sanitarium facility in the hills," Margaret said, her hand resting over Elena's as she sat down. "The nurses there look at me like I'm a medical chart. But you... you looked at me like a person who needed help. I want you to manage my daily care here at the palace."
"Madam Margaret, I am honored," Elena said, her voice soft but clear. "But I don't have a formal medical degree. I only know how to take care of people from caring for my brother."
"Human compassion cannot be taught in a university, Miss Winters," Alexander said, his deep baritone drawing her eyes to his. He was looking at her with an intensity that made the skin on her neck prickle. It wasn't the cold, calculating look he gave his business rivals; it was a gaze full of a profound, rising curiosity. "My mother's health has improved more in the last twelve hours of your company than in three months of clinical isolation. Name your salary. Whatever it is, I will triple it."

"I... I just want to ensure she is safe, Mr. Sterling," Elena replied, her green eyes locking onto his gray ones with an unyielding sincerity that surprised him. "Money isn't the reason I stopped that hand last night."
Alexander’s eyes narrowed slightly, a faint, intrigued smile touching his lips. In his world, everyone had a price, every interaction was a transaction. But this woman, who wore a faded maid's uniform and possessed nothing, looked at him without a single trace of greed.
