Chapter 1 - The Shadow of the Oath

The west parlor smelled of expensive cigars, centuries-old mahogany, and the faint, unmistakable scent of fear.
Sophia paced the length of the silk-carpeted floor, her knuckles white as she squeezed the brass key Damiano had handed her before locking them in. On the plush leather sofa across the room, six-year-old Emma sat cross-legged, humming a soft, broken lullaby to her ragged doll, Lily. Children were remarkably resilient, Sophia thought, but the terrifying truth was that Emma had no idea how close she had come to dying—or how thin the line remained between their survival and total annihilation.
Outside the heavy oak doors, the silence was deafening. The estate had gone completely dark, save for the emergency backup lights casting long, eerie amber shadows down the grand hallways.
Sophia’s mind raced. The shiny lady. Emma could only mean one person: Isabella Vance. Isabella was the heiress to the Vance shipping empire, a breathtaking socialite with spun-gold hair, porcelain skin, and diamonds that caught every ray of light. She was Damiano’s fiancée—a union arranged to consolidate maritime supply lines and enforce a stranglehold over the East Coast trade routes. If Isabella was behind the bomb under Damiano’s desk, it meant the historic peace deal wasn’t just a target; it was a trap designed to wipe out the entire Five Families in a single, devastating explosion.
Suddenly, the heavy iron lock clicked.
Sophia backed away, pulling Emma behind her legs, her pulse hammering in her ears. The heavy door creaked open, revealing Damiano Moretti.
His dark bespoke suit was spotless, but his tie had been loosened, and his charcoal-grey eyes held a chilling, deadly calm. Behind him stood his most trusted enforcer, Lucian, whose knuckles were fresh with raw blood.
"Is it... safe?" Sophia managed to whisper, her voice trembling.
Damiano didn't answer right away. He stepped into the room, his long stride authoritative and unhurried. He closed the door behind him, isolating the three of them from the chaos echoing down the lower levels of the estate.
"The device was C4, wired with a dual-frequency detonator," Damiano said, his voice smooth as velvet and cold as ice. "Set to trigger the moment the five Dons sat down at the table. Enough force to take down the entire east wing of the manor."
Sophia gasped, bringing a hand to her mouth. "The man with the sad eyes..."
"Marco," Damiano confirmed grimly. "My head of internal security. He’s been on my payroll for twelve years. Lucian is currently... asking him who else bought his loyalty."
Damiano slowly knelt in front of Emma, just as he had done in the hallway minutes before. The terrifying Don of New York—a man whose name made hardened criminals pale—softened his posture entirely when looking at the little girl.
"You saved my life, little one," Damiano said softly, extending a hand. "And you saved the lives of many men who do not deserve it. But more importantly, you were brave."
Emma looked up from her doll, her wide blue eyes searching his face. "Is the shiny lady mad at us?"
A dark, dangerous flicker flashed in Damiano’s eyes, gone as quickly as it appeared. "The shiny lady will never touch a hair on your head, Emma. I give you my word."
He stood up, turning his full attention to Sophia. His gaze was intense, scanning her panicked face, taking in her trembling shoulders and the maid’s apron still tied around her waist.
"The other four Dons are arriving at the front gate in ten minutes," Damiano stated calmly. "They believe they are coming to sign a treaty. Instead, they are walking into a warzone."
"What are you going to do?" Sophia asked, her heart dropping. "If Isabella and Marco tried to blow you up, her family must be working with one of the other Dons! You can't trust any of them!"
"I don't trust any of them," Damiano replied flatly. "Which is precisely why I am going to change the rules of the game tonight. The treaty is dead. But the peace deal must go on—under new terms."
He took a step closer to Sophia, his massive frame looming over her, yet his presence felt oddly protective rather than threatening.
"You and Emma cannot leave this house, Sophia. Isabella knows Emma saw her. The moment you step outside these gates without my protection, Vance's men will hunt you down to eliminate the witness."
"We can run," Sophia begged, tears welling in her eyes. "I can take Emma and leave the city—leave the state! We’ll change our names!"
"You wouldn't make it to the airport," Damiano said firmly, taking her by the upper arms. His touch was firm, grounding her spiraling panic. "Listen to me, Sophia. You stayed here to earn an honest living to raise your daughter. Tonight, your daughter saved my empire. I do not abandon my debts. I am going to keep you safe, but to do that, the world needs to know who you are to me."
Sophia blinked, confused. "What... what do you mean?"
"In ten minutes, I am going to walk into the grand ballroom and face five of the most ruthless men in North America," Damiano declared, his eyes burning with absolute authority. "I am going to announce that the engagement between myself and Isabella Vance is terminated due to treason. And then, I am going to claim you and Emma as my family."
Sophia’s breath hitched in her throat. "Your family? Damiano, I am a widow! I am a waitress! They will tear us apart!"
"They will try," Damiano countered, a cold, dangerous smile touching his lips. "Which is why they need to know that an attack on you is an attack on the entire Moretti syndicate. Tonight, you are no longer a maid in this house, Sophia. Tonight, you step out as the woman under my protection—and the mother of the girl who saved New York."
Before Sophia could process his words, the heavy iron gates of the estate groaned open downstairs. The convoy of dark armored SUVs had arrived.
Damiano turned to Lucian, who stood silently by the door. "Take Sophia to my private quarters. Have the stylists dress her. Something regal. Something that commands respect. And put four guards on Emma’s door."

"Understood, Boss," Lucian replied with a deep bow.
Damiano looked back at Sophia one last time, his dark eyes locking onto hers with unyielding resolve. "Trust me, Sophia. Hold your head high. The storm is coming, but I am the shield."
