Chapter 4 - The Federal Siege

The blare of emergency sirens didn't come from police cars; it came from the internal defense systems of the Moretti stronghold.
Within ninety seconds of Lucian’s warning, heavy steel blast shutters dropped over every window of the estate, sealing the mansion into an impenetrable fortress. Crimson emergency lights pulsed through the grand hallways, turning the palace into a combat bunker.
Damiano moved with terrifying efficiency. He pulled a silver key from around his neck and unlocked a hidden panel in the library wall, revealing an armory loaded with high-tech tactical gear and automatic weapons.
"Lucian, take the perimeter team to the south gate," Damiano commanded as he strapped a tactical vest over his dress shirt. "Hold the line without firing lethal rounds if they are federal agents. If they are mercenaries dressed in federal gear, wipe them out."
"Understood, Boss!" Lucian barked, sprinting down the hall with six heavily armed guards.
Sophia clutched Emma close to her chest in the center of the library. "Damiano, what is happening? Are the police raiding us?"
"No," Damiano said, stepping over to her and handing her a small, lightweight concealable pistol. He wrapped her hands around the grip. "The FBI doesn't move this fast without authorization. Isabella’s faction had ties to corrupted federal agents on their payroll. They aren't here to arrest me, Sophia. They are here to execute me before I can testify to the state commission about their dirty shipping routes."
Emma buried her face in Sophia’s neck, whimpering softly. Damiano knelt beside them, pressing his thumb gently against Emma’s cheek.
"Listen to me, little princess," Damiano said in a calm, soothing tone that defied the chaotic sirens blaring above. "Do you remember the secret passage under the library hearth?"
Emma nodded timidly. "The one with the golden dragon keyhole?"
"Exactly," Damiano smiled faintly. "You and Mommy are going to go down there. It leads to an underground bunker beneath the guest house. It is safe, warm, and built to survive a bomb. Will you be brave for me one more time?"
"Are you coming with us?" Emma asked, her small voice trembling.
"I have to clean up a mess in my house first," Damiano replied softly. He looked up at Sophia, his dark eyes burning with fierce emotion. "If anything happens to me, Lucian knows the coordinates to my safe house in Sicily. There is an offshore trust in your name with enough wealth to guarantee Emma’s future forever."
"Don't talk like that!" Sophia snapped, tears streaming down her face as she grabbed his tactical vest. "You brought us into this world, Damiano Moretti! You don't get to die and leave us behind!"
Damiano stared at her, caught off guard by her fiery defiance. Slowly, a smirk spread across his face. He leaned in, cupping her face in his hands, and pressed his lips to hers in a deep, desperate, and passionate kiss that stole the breath from her lungs.

"Then I guess I’ll just have to survive," Damiano whispered against her lips.
He pulled the hidden lever on the fireplace mantle. The heavy stone hearth swung inward, revealing a dimly lit subterranean passage. Damiano guided Sophia and Emma inside, securing the heavy reinforced door behind them just as the sound of heavy breaching explosives detonated at the front doors of the mansion.
