Chapter 6 - The Shadows of Sicily

The raid on the Moretti estate made international headlines, though the true details were buried deep beneath government cover-ups. The corrupted rogue faction within the federal task force was dismantled, but the East Coast was no longer safe. The power vacuum left by the collapse of the Vance family had triggered a wild, lawless turf war among mid-level cartel bosses trying to claim New York.

To ensure their absolute safety, Damiano evacuated Sophia and Emma aboard his private yacht under the dark cover of midnight, sailing straight across the Atlantic to the island of Sicily.

The Moretti ancestral estate in Taormina sat high on a cliff overlooking the azure waters of the Ionian Sea. It was an ancient stone castle surrounded by olive groves, lemon trees, and guarded by three hundred loyal Sicilian soldiers whose families had served the Moretti bloodline for centuries.

For the first time in months, Sophia felt the crushing weight of fear lift from her chest.

Emma flourished in the warm Italian sun. She ran through the sprawling vineyards with a golden retriever puppy Damiano had bought for her, her infectious laughter echoing through the ancient stone courtyards.

One evening, as the sun dipped beneath the horizon, painting the Sicilian sky in brilliant shades of lavender and gold, Sophia stood on the cliffside terrace, sipping local wine.

Damiano walked up behind her, wrapping his arms gently around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder. The lethal Don of New York was entirely relaxed here, wearing a simple linen shirt, his dark hair tousled by the sea breeze.

"She looks happy," Damiano whispered, watching Emma chase the puppy near the fountain below.

"She hasn't had a nightmare in three weeks," Sophia said softly, leaning back into his warm chest. "Neither have I. Thank you, Damiano. For everything."

Damiano turned her around gently in his arms, his grey eyes searching her face with an intensity that made her heart skip a beat.

"I didn't bring you here just to hide, Sophia," he said, his voice deep and velvet. "I brought you here because this is where my family belongs. This is where I want to build a real life—away from the poison of New York."

Sophia looked at him, surprised. "Are you saying... you're stepping down?"

"I have spent fifteen years building an empire out of blood and fear," Damiano admitted, running his thumb over her soft lower lip. "I thought that was all I was built for. But the night your daughter looked at me under that desk... the night you held a gun to protect our home... I realized what true strength actually is. It isn't killing your enemies. It’s protecting the ones you love."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. Opening it, he revealed a breathtaking ring featuring an uncut, radiant canary diamond surrounded by rare black pearls.

"Sophia," Damiano said, kneeling on one knee before the open Mediterranean sky. "You saved my soul. Your daughter saved my life. I don't want you to be my protected consort. I want you to be my wife. The mistress of the Moretti name. Will you marry me?"

Tears of joy brimmed in Sophia’s eyes. She didn't hesitate for a single second. "Yes," she whispered, throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes, Damiano! A thousand times yes!"
