Chapter 3 - The Fortress of Silk and Steel

In the days following the catastrophic night, the Moretti estate was placed on absolute lockdown. While the public news reported the sudden retirement of the Vance family patriarch and the quiet dissolution of their shipping empire, behind closed doors, a bloody purge was taking place across the East Coast.
Sophia moved into the master wing of the mansion. Her previous tiny quarters in the staff lodge felt like a distant nightmare. Yet, despite the velvet robes, personal chefs, and endless security guards, she felt entirely out of her depth.
She sat on the expansive balcony overlooking the manicured rose gardens, watching Emma play with a brand-new, elaborate dollhouse that Damiano had ordered from Italy.
"You look like a ghost sitting in a palace," a voice purred.
Sophia turned to see Damiano stepping out onto the terrace. He had shed his formal jacket, wearing only a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing dark, intricate tattoos creeping up his wrists.
"I feel like a ghost," Sophia admitted softly. "A week ago, I was scrubbing your floor tiles and worrying about paying Emma’s pediatric bill. Today, I have four armed men standing outside my bathroom door. Damiano... is this real? Or am I just a temporary shield until the dust settles?"
Damiano walked over, leaning his heavy frame against the stone balustrade right beside her. He looked down at Emma, who was laughing as she arranged tiny furniture.
"I don't play games with lives, Sophia," he said quietly. "When I declared you and Emma under my protection, it wasn't a tactical bluff. In our world, a blood oath is sacred. Breaking it means my own men would have the right to put a bullet in my spine."
Sophia looked into his eyes, searching for any sign of deceit. "Why us? You could have paid me off. You could have given us ten million dollars and sent us to Switzerland."
"Money wouldn't have kept you safe from Isabella’s loyalists," Damiano countered, his voice dripping with harsh truth. "And besides... Switzerland is too far."
Sophia’s breath caught in her throat. "Too far for what?"
Damiano reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear. The contrast between his lethal reputation and his gentle touch sent a shiver straight down her spine.
"Too far from me," he murmured. "My whole life, people have approached me for power, money, or fear. Your daughter looked at me with pure innocence and saved my life. And you... you stood up in a room full of murderers and called out a Don’s daughter to protect your child. I don't give away my heart easily, Sophia. But I know true loyalty when I see it."
Before Sophia could respond, the terrace doors flew open. Lucian stepped out, his face pale and tight.
"Boss," Lucian said grimly. "We have a problem. Isabella didn't act alone. We intercepted a comms signal from the Federal Bureau. Someone inside our organization leaked the estate's floor plans to the FBI's organized crime task force."

Damiano’s expression instantly turned to stone. "Who?"
"It wasn't a Don," Lucian whispered, glancing nervously at Sophia. "It was someone from the old Vance crew. The FBI just issued an emergency federal warrant for your arrest, signed by a rogue judge. And a tactical team is already en route to the perimeter."
