Chapter 2 - The Bloodline Declaration

The grand ballroom of the Moretti estate was a cathedral of marble, gold leaf, and high-tension danger. Heavy crystal chandeliers threw sharp, fracturing light over five massive mahogany tables set up in a pentagon, each representing a major syndicate of the East Coast.

Sophia stood at the top of the grand double staircase, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Gone was the black waitress uniform and stained white apron. In its place, she wore a floor-length emerald silk gown tailored to perfection, her soft curls pinned back with subtle pearl clips. Beside her stood Emma, dressed in a sweet cream-colored velvet dress, clutching her worn rag doll in one hand and Damiano’s pinky finger with the other.

At the center of the room stood the four visiting Dons—men whose names were spoken only in whispered terror across the seaboard: Don Falcone of Philadelphia, Don Moretti’s rival from Chicago, the ruthless Russian broker Nikolai Volkov, and Old Man Vance, Isabella’s father, whose frail appearance masked a viper’s soul. Beside Old Man Vance stood Isabella herself, glowing in a sapphire gown, her smile pristine and sharp as a razor.

The murmurs died instantly as Damiano stepped into the light at the top of the stairs, flanked by Sophia and Emma.

"Damiano," Old Man Vance called out, his raspy voice cutting through the silent room. "What is the meaning of this delay? And why have you brought a housemaid and a child to a blood treaty?"

Isabella’s eyes locked onto Emma, and for a fraction of a second, her pristine composure shattered into sheer, icy rage. She knew immediately.

Damiano didn't answer right away. He slowly escorted Sophia and Emma down the staircase, his presence commanding the vast room until every eye was fixed entirely on him. He brought them to the head of the central table, placing his hand gently on Sophia’s shoulder.

"The peace treaty is canceled," Damiano said, his voice echoing smoothly across the marble halls.

A loud chorus of shouts and curses erupted from the Dons. Weapons shifted under tailored jackets.

"Are you insane, Moretti?" Don Falcone bellowed, stepping forward. "We spent eighteen months brokering this deal! You drag us out here to insult us?"

"I drag you here to inform you that there is a snake in this room," Damiano replied coldly. He snapped his fingers.

The double doors of the ballroom burst open, and Lucian dragged in Marco—Damiano’s head of security. Marco was bloodied, bruised, and barely conscious. Lucian threw him onto the center table, where he collapsed among the crystal carafes.

Isabella took an involuntary step back, her face draining of color.

"Marco was paid two million dollars to place three pounds of plastic explosive beneath my desk," Damiano said calmly, walking the perimeter of the pentagon. "Set to detonate five minutes after we sat down. Every man in this room was meant to die tonight."

Gasps filled the room. Nikolai Volkov immediately drew his weapon, pointing it at Marco, while Falcone glared at Damiano. "Who bought him?"

"He didn't take cash from a Don," Damiano said, stopping right behind Isabella Vance. He leaned down, whispering near her ear so the entire room could hear. "He took it from a viper who thought she could inherit both the Vance shipping lines and the Moretti empire in one swift explosion."

"This is absurd!" Isabella shrieked, backing away toward her father. "He’s lying! He’s trying to frame my family so he can back out of our marriage!"

"My daughter was in his office," Sophia suddenly spoke up, her voice ringing out clear, steady, and fierce. She stepped forward, shielding Emma. "She saw Marco place the device. And she saw you tell him not to touch the button. You threatened my child’s life to keep her quiet."

"You dare take the word of a servant over my blood?" Old Man Vance spat, reaching into his coat.

Before Vance’s hand could clear his jacket, a single, suppressed gunshot echoed through the room. Vance gasped, dropping to his knees as blood bloomed across his thigh. Damiano stood over him, his custom SIG Sauer still smoking.

"Listen to me carefully, all of you," Damiano announced, his gray eyes sweeping over the terrifying men in the room. "The Vance family is stripped of their commission. Their assets are seized by the Moretti syndicate effective immediately. Isabella Vance will face the council for attempted assassination of five supreme leaders."

Isabella collapsed to her knees, sobbing hysterical pleas as Lucian’s men seized her and bound her hands.

Damiano turned back to the remaining Dons, who stood frozen, recognizing the absolute power shift that had just occurred. Damiano had not only survived a coup; he had swallowed the Vance empire in a single breath.

"And one more thing," Damiano added, his tone softening as he stepped back to Sophia’s side. He reached out, taking Sophia’s hand and pulling her close, while lifting Emma gently into his left arm. "Sophia is no longer a staff member of this house. She is my protected consort. And Emma is under my personal blood oath. If anyone— Don, enforcer, or street runner—so much as looks at them with bad intent, I will burn their legacy to ash."

Don Falcone looked at Sophia, then at Damiano, realizing the game had completely changed. He slowly lowered his weapon and inclined his head. "Understood, Moretti."

One by one, the most feared men on the East Coast bowed their heads in silent submission to the supreme Don of New York—and the unexpected family that had saved his life.
