Chapter 5 - Flames of the Underworld

The underground bunker was surprisingly luxurious, equipped with leather couches, satellite monitors, and fresh water supplies. But for Sophia, it felt like a golden cage.
On the wall of tactical monitors, Sophia watched the nightmare unfold in real-time through internal CCTV feeds.
A squad of black-clad tactical operators had breached the grand foyer. But these were no ordinary feds—they wore no badge numbers, carried illegal silenced submachine guns, and shot down the estate's security cams one by one. They were death squad mercenaries hired by the disgraced Vance faction to liquidate the entire Moretti lineage.
Sophia watched in breathless horror as Damiano moved like a shadow through his own house. Using his knowledge of the mansion's secret passages, he ambushed the intruders with ruthless precision. He was a master predator in his own domain, dropping mercenaries one by one in the dimly lit corridors.
Suddenly, the screen showing the main hallway cut to static. Then another. And another.
"No, no, no..." Sophia muttered, tapping the glass screen frantically.
A heavy THUD echoed from the ceiling above the bunker. Footsteps. Heavy combat boots were walking right over the subterranean shelter.
Sophia realized with a jolt of horror that the mercenaries weren't just searching the top floors—they were using thermal imaging scanners to hunt for underground life signatures.
"Mommy, I'm scared," Emma whispered, clutching her rag doll tightly near the bunker’s sofa.
Sophia looked at the silver gun Damiano had given her. She was a mother, a woman who had spent years cowering from the cruelty of the world, hiding in the shadows just to earn a meager living. But as she looked at her innocent daughter, something inside Sophia broke—and re-forged itself into pure steel.
"Stay under the bed, Emma," Sophia ordered in a low, sharp tone. "No matter what you hear, do not come out until I open the door."
Sophia walked over to the bunker’s main entry hatch. She disengaged the heavy magnetic lock, stepping quietly into the dark access tunnel above.
As she reached the top of the iron stairs leading to the ruined library, she saw a mercenary leaning over a control console, setting a breaching charge directly over the bunker’s ventilation shaft.
"Hey!" Sophia called out, her voice loud and echoing through the burning room.
The mercenary spun around, bringing his rifle up—but Sophia didn't hesitate. Remembering Damiano’s instructions, she raised the silver handgun with both hands and pulled the trigger three times.
The gun roared in the tight space. The mercenary collapsed backward against the marble pillar, his weapon clattering across the floor.
Sophia stood there, her hands shaking violently, smoke drifting from the barrel of her gun. She had just fired a weapon for the first time in her life—to save her child and the man she was coming to love.
Suddenly, a hand reached out from the shadows behind her, grabbing her wrist. Sophia gasped, turning to strike—but stopped immediately.
It was Damiano. His face was smeared with soot and blood, his chest heaving, but he was alive. He looked at the fallen mercenary, then at the smoking gun in Sophia’s hand, and finally into her wide, fierce eyes.
A slow, awe-inspired smile broke across his blood-stained face.

"My wild queen," Damiano breathed, pulling her tightly into his arms. "I told you to stay in the bunker."
"And I told you I wasn't going to let you die," Sophia retorted, burying her face in his neck, sobbing with relief.
