Chapter 1 - The Savior at the Door

The pounding on the front door resonated through the hollow, silent house like a drumbeat of sudden hope. Clara lay paralyzed on the cold hardwood floor, her fingers twitching against the polished oak. Every breath felt like inhaling broken glass. Another contraction rippled through her abdomen—a violent, tearing spasm that forced a ragged gasp from her throat.
"Help..." she whispered, though the sound barely carried past her own lips.
Outside, the knocking grew louder, followed by a firm, authoritative voice. "Hello? Courier service, I have a package requiring a signature for Clara Vance!"
It was Marcus. He was the regular neighborhood delivery driver, a friendly, soft-spoken man in his late twenties who had often helped Clara carry heavy boxes of nursery furniture up the porch steps over the past few months.
Clara gathered every shred of her remaining strength. She dragged her body forward, her nails scraping against the floorboards. The pain was an all-consuming fire, but the maternal instinct to protect her unborn twins burned brighter. She reached the bottom of the heavy mahogany entryway table, grabbed the edge, and pulled herself up just enough to knock over a heavy, decorative ceramic vase.
The vase shattered against the floor with a deafening crash.
Outside, the knocking stopped instantly. "Clara? Is that you? Are you okay in there?" Marcus’s voice shifted from professional to deeply concerned.
"Marcus..." Clara cried out, her voice cracking. "Please... the door is locked... I’m in labor... help me!"
Marcus didn't hesitate. Through the frosted glass panel of the door, Clara saw his shadow shift. A second later, a heavy shoulder slammed against the wooden frame. The lock held. He backed up and threw his weight into it a second time. With a loud splintering sound, the deadbolt ripped through the doorframe, and the door swung open.
Marcus gasped, his eyes widening in horror at the scene. Clara was slumped on the floor, surrounded by the shards of the shattered vase, clutching her stomach as a pool of fluid and blood began to darken her clothes.
"Oh my god, Clara!" Marcus dropped his clipboard and rushed to her side, instantly pulling out his phone. "Hold on, I'm calling 911. Just breathe, okay? I'm right here."
"The twins..." Clara choked out, tears streaming down her pale cheeks. "They're too early. Blake... he left me. He took his mother to the mall..."

As Marcus urgently spoke to the emergency dispatcher, giving them the address and describing her critical condition, he gently placed his jacket under Clara's head. He gripped her hand, his expression a mix of fury at her abandonment and absolute determination to keep her safe.
"They're on their way, Clara. The ambulance is coming," Marcus reassured her, squeezing her hand. "You are not going to do this alone. I'm staying right here."
