Chapter 4 - The Investigation and the Awakening

Before Blake could even stand up, the sound of wailing sirens echoed down the street. Three police cruisers screeched to a halt outside the house, their bright lights painting the blood-stained living room walls in flashing police colors.

Four armed officers stormed through the broken doorway, their weapons drawn. "Hands in the air! Nobody move!"

Blake, Diane, and Chloe screamed, throwing their hands up in terror.

"What is going on?!" Diane shrieked. "We just got home! Someone broke into our house and attacked my daughter-in-law!"

A stern-faced detective, Detective Vance (no relation to Clara), stepped forward. He looked at the discarded shopping bags, then at the bloody scene, and finally at Blake, who was still on his knees, trembling.

"Are you Blake Sterling?" Detective Vance demanded.

"Yes! Yes, I am!" Blake stammered. "Where is my wife? Where is Clara? Is she... is she dead?"

"Your wife is currently in the ICU at St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital," the detective said, his voice cold and hard as steel. "We received a 911 call from a local courier who found her locked inside this house, experiencing severe, life-threatening obstetric complications. The paramedic report states that she was abandoned by her spouse while in active, high-risk labor."

Diane tried to step in, her voice rising in defense. "Now see here, officer! It was a misunderstanding! She was just overreacting to normal pregnancy pains—"

"Ma'am, shut your mouth," Detective Vance snapped, his glare silencing her instantly. "The locks on the door were intact, and the victim had no way out because her husband took the only set of keys to go shopping. We are securing this house as a crime scene. Mr. Sterling, you are coming with us to the station for questioning regarding domestic abuse and reckless endangerment."

Meanwhile, at the hospital, Clara slowly opened her eyes. The harsh, fluorescent lights of the recovery room made her squint.

"Clara? Can you hear me?"

She turned her head slowly. Sitting beside her bed was her father, Arthur, and her mother, Eleanor. They looked exhausted, their eyes red from crying, but their faces were filled with overwhelming love and relief.

"Mom? Dad?" Clara whispered, her voice barely a breath. "How... how are you here?"

"We took an emergency flight off the cruise the moment we got the alert from the hospital," Eleanor said, tears spilling over her cheeks as she kissed Clara's forehead. "We are here, sweetheart. You're safe. We are never leaving you again."

Clara's hand instinctively went to her stomach. It was empty. A spike of pure panic shot through her chest. "My babies... where are my babies?"

Arthur gently smiled, squeezing her shoulder. "They are in the NICU, Clara. A beautiful baby boy and a beautiful baby girl. They are breathing on their own. They are fighters, just like their mother."
