Chapter 8 - The Desperate Backlash

Cornered, ruined, and desperate, the Sterling family began to unravel. Blake’s phone calls to Clara became increasingly manic, shifting from pathetic pleading to dark, veiled threats.
"You ruined my life, Clara!" Blake screamed into her voicemail. "I have nothing left! No job, no reputation, nothing! If you think you're going to take my kids away from me and get away with this, you are dead wrong!"
Clara immediately took the recordings to the police, and Detective Vance updated the restraining order to include strict criminal penalties for any contact.
But Diane Sterling was a woman driven by a toxic, narcissistic pride. She refused to accept defeat. In her mind, Clara was a lower-class interloper who had ruined her perfect family.
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, Clara’s mother, Eleanor, took Leo and Maya out to the backyard veranda for some fresh air while Clara was inside preparing their bottles.
Suddenly, a dark SUV sped up to the back gate of the property.
Diane and Chloe jumped out of the vehicle, wearing heavy coats and sunglasses. Diane pushed open the unlocked garden gate and marched toward the veranda, her face twisted in a desperate, manic grin.
"Give me those babies!" Diane shrieked, lunging toward the double stroller. "They belong to the Sterling family! You have no right to keep them from us!"
Eleanor screamed, immediately throwing her body over the stroller to shield the infants. "Get away from them! Clara, help!"
Clara sprinted out of the kitchen, grabbing a heavy wooden rolling pin from the counter. She burst onto the veranda just as Chloe tried to pull Eleanor away from the stroller.
"Get the hell away from my children!" Clara roared, her voice filled with a terrifying, protective fury that made both Diane and Chloe freeze. She stood between them and the stroller, holding the rolling pin like a weapon, her eyes burning with a dangerous light.

At that moment, the sound of blaring sirens echoed down the street.
"You think we didn't expect you to do something desperate?" Clara sneered, pointing to the security cameras installed around her parents' house. "The moment your car pulled up, the silent alarm was triggered. You're going to jail, Diane."
