Chapter 5 - The Confrontation at the Hospital

Two days later, Clara was moved out of the ICU and into a private recovery room. The physical pain of the emergency C-section was intense, but it was nothing compared to the fierce, protective flame burning in her chest. She had held her babies—whom she named Leo and Maya—for the first time that morning. Looking into their tiny, innocent eyes, Clara made a silent, unbreakable vow: Blake and his toxic family would never touch them.
The peace of the recovery room was abruptly shattered when the heavy wooden door was pushed open.
Blake stumbled in, looking disheveled, his eyes bloodshot and dark circles staining his skin. Behind him, Diane and Chloe marched in, their faces tight with defensive anger.
"Clara!" Blake gasped, rushing toward the bed. "Thank God you're okay. I’ve been worried sick! The police kept me for eighteen hours, it was a total nightmare—"
"Stop right there," Clara said. Her voice wasn't loud, but it carried a freezing, absolute authority that made Blake freeze in his tracks.
"Clara, darling," Diane chimed in, putting on a sickeningly sweet smile. "Let’s not make a scene. We are so glad the babies are fine. Of course, Blake was just stressed. We all were. We should put this little incident behind us and focus on being a family."
Clara looked at Diane, then at Chloe, and finally at her husband. The man she had loved, the man who had promised to protect her, but who had ultimately left her to die for a leather handbag.
"A family?" Clara let out a cold, humorless laugh. "You left me to die, Blake. You locked me in the house while I was screaming in agony. You told me 'don't you dare move' while your mother sneered at my pain."
"I didn't know it was that serious!" Blake pleaded, reaching out to grab her hand. "I swear, Clara, if I had known—"
"Get your hands off my daughter."
Arthur stepped out from the adjoining bathroom, his tall frame instantly occupying the space between Blake and the bed. His face was a mask of pure, paternal fury. Behind him, a sharp-suited woman in her late forties stepped into the room, holding a leather briefcase.
"Who are you?" Diane demanded, scoffing. "This is a private family matter!"
"I am Sarah Jenkins, Clara's legal counsel," the attorney announced, opening her briefcase and handing Blake a thick envelope. "And as of ten minutes ago, you have been served with divorce papers, a emergency temporary restraining order, and a petition for sole physical and legal custody of Leo and Maya Sterling."
May you like
"Divorce?!" Blake gasped, looking at the papers in horror. "Clara, you can't do this! They are my children too!"
"You forfeited that right the moment you slammed that door," Clara said, her eyes burning with an icy resolve. "Now get out of my room, before I have hospital security and the police escort you out in handcuffs."
