Chapter 9 - The Trial and Justice

The courtroom was packed to capacity. The media sat in the back rows, their notebooks ready, while the gallery was filled with local supporters holding signs of encouragement for Clara.
Blake, Diane, and Chloe sat at the defense table, looking pale, exhausted, and utterly defeated. They were facing multiple felony charges, including criminal confinement, reckless endangerment, and attempted child abduction.
The prosecution presented a devastating case. They played the Ring doorbell footage, showed the medical records detailing Clara's severe hemorrhaging and the emergency C-section, and called Marcus, the delivery driver, to the stand.
Marcus recounted the sheer terror of finding Clara on the floor. "She was screaming for her babies. She was left to die in that house. If I hadn't forced that door open, she and those beautiful children wouldn't be here today."
When Clara took the stand, she looked radiant, strong, and completely at peace. She looked directly at Blake, who couldn't even meet her gaze.
"I trusted him with my life, and the lives of our children," Clara testified, her voice clear and unwavering. "But to Blake and his family, my life was worth less than a trip to the mall. They didn't just abandon me; they locked me in a tomb. I am not standing here today as a victim. I am standing here as a mother who will protect her children from their toxicity for the rest of my days."
After only two hours of deliberation, the jury returned with a unanimous verdict.
Guilty on all counts.
The judge, a stern woman with no patience for domestic abusers, delivered a scathing sentencing.
"Blake Sterling, your actions on the afternoon of your children's birth represent a level of callous neglect that this court has rarely seen. You are sentenced to seven years in state prison."
The courtroom erupted into cheers.

"Diane Sterling," the judge continued, looking down at the weeping older woman. "For your role in inciting this neglect and your subsequent attempted abduction of the children, you are sentenced to five years in prison. Chloe Sterling, you are sentenced to three years of intensive probation and community service."
Furthermore, the judge granted Clara absolute, sole physical and legal custody of Leo and Maya, striping Blake of all parental rights permanently.
