Chapter 1 - The Line in the Sand
I squeezed Lily’s small hand. “You are staying forever, Lily. Nobody will ever take you away.” She hugged her stuffed fox, Barnaby, crying softly against my hospital bed.
Suddenly, the door slammed open. Vanessa burst in, face red with rage, holding her phone. “Are you crazy, Sarah?! An $18,000 loan guarantee! I signed the lease for my boutique! You ruined me!”
Lily shrank back in terror. Cold anger flushed through me. “Get out,” I said softly.
“We are your real family!” Vanessa screamed. “Mom is crying, Dad’s blood pressure is sky-high! All over a tantrum from a kid who isn’t even yours?”
“Security!” Rachel, my pediatric nurse friend, stepped in with two large guards. They grabbed Vanessa’s arms and dragged her out as she cursed at me.
Two days later, I was discharged. As Rachel drove us to my apartment, my father was waiting at the garage gate. I stepped out to face him.

“Sarah, this has gone too far,” he demanded. “Vanessa faces legal action from her landlord. Lily isn't blood! You’re destroying your real family!”
“Lily is my daughter,” I replied calmly. “And as of today, you no longer have a daughter or a granddaughter.” I walked away, leaving him standing in the cold.
