Realizing public sympathy was gone, my father used his final leverage. As a senior partner in a local accounting firm, he reached out to my major design clients, threatening to audit their books or withhold services if they continued working with my company.
Two of my biggest corporate clients abruptly canceled their contracts, leaving my income crippled.
I sat at my desk, head in my hands, staring at a mountain of legal bills and impending mortgage payments. Lily quietly walked in and placed her favorite drawing on my lap—a picture of us holding hands under a big yellow sun.
“Mommy, don’t be sad. We have Barnaby,” she whispered.
