Chapter 8 - The Final Desperate Act

Six months later, life had settled into a peaceful rhythm. My business had rebounded with new, ethical clients, and Lily was thriving in her new school, making friends and taking art classes.
However, Vanessa’s bitterness had festered into obsession. Having lost her business, her money, and her reputation, she tracked down our new address through an illegal public records search.
One rainy afternoon while I was picking up groceries, Vanessa cornered Lily and her babysitter at the local park.
She grabbed Lily’s arm, hysterically crying, “Lily! Tell the judge you want to see us! Tell them your mother is crazy!”
Lily screamed. The babysitter immediately used pepper spray on Vanessa, dropping her to her knees, and called 911.

I arrived at the scene just as the police were snapping handcuffs onto Vanessa’s wrists. She was hauled away, screaming incoherently about "unnatural children" and "family loyalty."
This time, it wasn't just a civil violation. Vanessa was charged with felony stalking, attempted child abduction, and violating a protection order.
