Chapter 3 - Ambush at the Gates

A week later, I took Lily to her elementary school. As we walked toward the entrance, a figure rushed out from behind a parked SUV—my mother, tears streaming down her face.

“Lily! Baby, come to Grandma!” she cried, reaching out to grab Lily’s arm.

Lily screamed and hid behind my legs. School security immediately moved in.

“Stay away from her!” I shouted, stepping between my mother and my daughter.

“Sarah, please!” my mother sobbed, making a scene in front of dozens of parents. “You’ve poisoned her against us! We loved her! We just wanted what was best for you!”

“You told a six-year-old orphan she was disposable!” I hissed.

The school principal and two police officers arrived. Because Arthur had already submitted the legal warning and restricted pickup lists, the officers placed my mother under temporary restraint.

“Ms. Carter, do you wish to press charges for trespassing and harassment?” the officer asked.

I looked at my mother’s pleading, desperate eyes. “Yes,” I said without hesitation. “Press charges.”
